WTF i just upgraded my line last night ? and this is what im getting

do i have to change settings on the router ?? or let my ISP know im on a 4Meg line ??

Eish not cool

no, but how far are you from the telkom exchange, if its more that 5 km, you going to have a problem running a 4meg line, you might need them to drop the speed of the line to 3meg, phone them and ask them to drop it for a day and see if it comes right.

I had the same problems when I upgraded to 4 meg.

You line is not syncing properly, it could be caused by corrision or distance from the exchange. Telkom dropped my speed to 3 Meg and now it is stable as a rock.

It is called Up to 4MB not 4MB. They know their copper sucks and that they can't deliver 4MB everywhere. My previous place could not even handle 2MB.

Had to go down to 384 before it was stable...

Ooh and they have 8MB lines in the pipeline. haha what a joke.

well you're actually paying for an UP TO 4MEG line, according to telscum ;)

get into your router , look at the noise margins (SNR) and line attenuation...

if they are lower than 8 for snr and higher than 50 for down attenuation , you'll have issues....downgrade and test each profile 3072/2048/1024 <--same price .

Also post your make of router as I had stability problems with the Telkom 200 modem but when I switched to a Netgear the line improved immensely.

nope you pay the same telkom views speeds from 1 t 4 megs as one package or in other words a according to them you are paying for a 1 meg line and telkom bumps you up to 4 meg at no extra charge with the condition that if u not able to connect at 4 meg they have the right to drop u down up to a minium of 1 meg/s but 3 megs usually does stabilize your line

agg no you serious i want my 4Mb line :( using a D-Link 504-T
will check SNR this afternoon and let you dudes know

hopefully ill be ok maybe it just needs to sync properly

Before you go about downgrading your line, make sure you get a techie to just check your line for any corrosion or faults along the line. ;)

I had a 4mb line for about 6 months, which then became very unstable and kept disconnecting. Telkom's initial plan was to downgrade my speed until it became stable.

I wasn't very happy with this and after much complaining, a techie came out and found that the 'Box' on our closest telephone pole was corroded, he replaced it and everything was perfect, my line stats improved a lot. :)

ok well phoned 0800375375 spoke to a lady

she said that copper looks fine and test to the modem looked ok she reset the port but told me to check the line and if not stable then i would have to phone back

She also kept mentioning that telkom are installing extra towers bla bla bla 8 MEG line LOL she even took my address to see if i qulify ?? whats that about ??

Check if you have filters attatched to everything. I found my fax machine was screwing with my synch when i upgraded aswell. Whats this about 8mbit plz :)

dont know dude yesterday i phone to upgrade they said i was lucky coz they doing
a upgrade of towers in my area to a 8 MEG line so i get it free

went home and checked my download speed at 7046 and upload at 1024 ???
then this morning went back to 4036 upload 384 or something like that

Now she says they building towers in the area but im slightly off the 8 MEG line ???

got no idea whats happening now

this is pretty much confirming all the 8mbit coming soon rumours. By towers she must mean exchanges. Cant wait :) Hope you get you synch issues sorted. Which area do you live in if you dont mind me asking

Interesting. It seems like the modem first synched at the highest speed the exchange supported, before your 4Mb profile was activated.

This could mean that the switchover to 8Mb could be 'imminent'.

Indeed! Considering telkom only sent out mails i think last week on the cap upgrades its safe to say we wont hear any official from Telkom for a while.
