We'll be mailing all of our existing clients with more info around the upgrades or whether they'd like to stay on the current packages.
Our website should be up soon, we're seeing a few issues in the Gallo Manor DC :(

MOBILE is always going to be cheaper to provide, less labour intensive to install and maintain, easier to upgrade, and will always be able to deliver 10x the speed of any fixed line connection. It is abundantly clear to anyone with discernment that MOBILE is the future, globally. If WIRED CONNECTIONS were superior, then both radio and TV services would have migrated to it, but they have not and never will. The only use for wired connections is to connect continents currently, because we haven't yet deployed low earth orbit satellite arrays to take over this function, but their day will come.

So given that MOBILE connections are the future for everyone, everywhere, chasing fixed line customers is wasted effort. A true leader and innovator will rent mobile capacity by the capacity at fixed monthly prices and roll out large data bundle packages for home office (50GB - 500GB) and business users (500+GB) with LTE devices / routers. A true leader in this space, won't sign an agreement with just one of the mobile operators, but with all 4, allowing connection through all of them, choosing the strongest signal in any given area, thus amalgamating the services of all operators to deliver a best of breed MOBILE internet offering.

A true leader will do this plus roll out wi-fi hot spots in high density areas, such as main roads, entire malls and not limit themselves to tiny little shops here and there. Devices will choose wi-fi / 3G / LTE automatically to get the best connectivity at any given location, while stationary or on the move.

This is the future of MOBILE internet connectivity.

I'm really sorry that we've let you down. I hope I can clear some things up for you here though.
The Mobile accounts where always scheduled to be reviewed after a certain amount of time. This was made clear on our website, and we mailed our clients around this - the 2+3GB and 3+7GB Mobile packages never had plans to be a permanent offering - but rather a launch special.

Mobile is an extremely expensive network to run, if it wasn't we would have dove into the market much earlier and offered Uncapped - unfortunately this isn't the case though.

As much as we which we could, we cannot simply roll out WiFi hotspots or our own GSM towers - this kind of investment goes into the Billions or Rands to provide.

He confirmed it will still be R297 per month and we will get 2mb uncapped data. I don't think he knows what he's saying but you never know.

For what you're looking for, it's more than possible - you may not even need a static IP at first. You can always play around with DynDNS or services like no-ip.org.

Thanks for the reply Afriguy, sorry to be a noob but when you say completely unshaped are you saying I will get 4mb up and down (thus not 4096/512 but 4096/4096). Also, I actually want to move away from dyn and would therefore need the static ip to host my own site, is this standard on these accounts or are there extra charges (special routers etc.). Thanks

No worries :) Unshaped means that we don't run any QoS on our side - so anything you want to do on the line will run as fast as the line/ package speed allows.

The static IP is an additional R50 on our Business accounts, you'll also need an L2TP compatible router to have this setup.

I think this was answered somewhere already. NO ISP will give you 4096/4096. Telkom's line are just not geared for that. You can do line bonding, that should give you higher upload speeds.

Alternatively, cough cough, Neotel. But that's a different can of worms.

Rather host your site somewhere else. There are a lot of cheap hosting companies out there.

so throttling is still applied?
 
I'm sticking with AH. Don't mind paying the 100 bucks extra especially when the only alternative I may consider at some stage is Telkom. AH's Clientzone alone is worth the price :D

So do I wait for that Email from Afrihost or do I go ahead and upgrade to 2MB/s seeing as though my line is already syncing at 2MB/s??????

I'm waiting for the mail. I don't feel I should be paying extra per month to upgrade when it did not cost Afrihost anything to 'upgrade' my line to 2mbps. I feel that they should give at least give us the upgrade for the bundle cost of R397. I have a feeling that Afrihost will possibly give current subscribers that option knowing how much they pride themselves on customer satisfaction.

There is a lot of confusion around these upgrades and I think the best process is to wait for Telkom to do their thing and then wait for a mail from us saying you've been upgraded. Problem, until Telkom updates your product and then let's us know - we can't do much.

If, for example, you were on 2Mbps from the beginning of the year. You would have been on the Faster (now called DSL2) bundle. But now that you're being upgraded - Telkom thinks you're still on DSL2, even though you're speedwise getting the service of DSL1. Until Telkom upgrades you and informs us, we can't downgrade you from 2Mbps (DSL2) to 2Mbps (DSL1). We also can't pass on a saving because Telkom says you're on DSL 2 - which is what we're billing you for.

So we have to let this play out and get through it as best we can. We went through a similar issue last year with 1Mbps to 2Mbps upgrades - it was very confusing and extremely painful but it eventually passed :(
 
Afri-people, is the new pricing in effect? I'm on an afrihost 2mbps uncapped bundle but still paying the old more expensive bundled price :confused: Why?

My line is syncing at 4mbps currently.

Sorry, I don't understand the DSL1 vs DSL2 scenario explained above!
 
You will need to downgrade your line to get the new 2mbps bundle price. If your line syncs at 4Mbps, that means you're on the DSL2 tier - which is still R279 and not R149 which makes up the 2mbps bundle.

You'll need to downgrade to 2Mbps (DSL1) by either doing it in ClientZone or waiting for the email which will assist with this.

Otherwise PM and I'll assist you as best I can :)
