New Cell C contract promotion

This isn't actually any kind of a deal, you're just paying for 2 phones instead of 1 over your contract duration.

Not really, do the math, an s3 on a normal build your own 1 year contract will cost around R799 including R100 airtime, here it costs you R599 so thats a R200 saving pm ....turns out they've done it again!

Yes but it appears that the amount of airtime bundled with is lower. Unless I'm misreading it.

The airtime is R100 either way......What makes you think its lower?

Eh not sure... I see what you mean there though. So for r600/month you'd be paying down an S3 in a year. That makes the total price of the handset R6000 (7200 - 1200 airtime). Ok that's not bad then.

On Build your own for Straightup 100 the total cost over 12 months is R9192. You get 100 minutes and 100 sms's, and 100 MB of data.

On the new contract promotion the total cost is R7188 but you only get R100 airtime. So either 100 minutes or 400 sms, or 400 MB of data, or a combination of that depending on your usage.

At least, that's how I understand it.

That's also where I'm stumbling. Can anyone clarify this?

No, you will me able to choose any phone offered under that particular contract package.

Even if SMS are becoming [-]cheaper[/-] less expensive, it is still ridiculously overpriced.

I still don't see how one SMS can cost the same as 1Mb of data (on this deal), or 67% more than 1Mb on the 15c/Mb deal.

1. Yes, the phones will change every year - depending on what is in the market at the time you will be able to select a handset of equal value.
2. The 15c rate is only applicable to data contracts and data bundles.

Also a bit confused.

Like for instance the Erica contract.
Is this like a top up 75 because it says included value of R75 and the R124 is an installment on the phone to get to R199 subscription?

R124 x 12= R1488.

The cash price of a Nokia Asha 302 or 303 is +- R1400.

Does not seem like such a good deal to me. More like a savings plan to buy the phone each year.

Pfft.

Like Rockhound, I also got out the calculator and, for example, on a 24 month contract, the Samsung Y Pro comes in at the RRP 1499, so no discount there.

Then I went to Bid or Buy and found the Y Pro on offer for R1199.

I've never been a fan of contracts, and only took out an R30 straight up to get the free added data & SMS. I also can cancel this 'contract' at any-time.

Best buy your own phone & avoid this addiction to my free upgrade, which is the best pair of contractual handcuffs I've ever seen!

You really are cost conscious!

Yes I know (I did read the earlier posts about Mambo#5), my comment is more along the lines of "Cell C did not think these contract products are worthy of names that actually describe the products".

Just imagine a conversation with your mates discussing cellphone contracts and you blurt out "I'm on the Erica Cell C contract", and the inevitable "chic contract" comments that will follow "what a screamer" and so forth.
