New DStv HD and SD channels unveiled

And how do they fit in the myriad subscriptions? Well, not the HD channels.

erm...I don't see anything "new" in that line-up

but the announcement of more HD channels is welcome

I welcome the new HD channels. I recently switched from regular PVR to an HD decoder and new 55" full HD TV. It has been absolutely awesome watching HD channels on a screen this size

Why do they keep moving stuff around

So there will be 6 more..... 2 are crap
Not really, MM1, MM2, fall away and become 5 x movie channels, so only 3 new channels there
The Universal channels are now also in HD, so nothing new
And there the new channels are Africa Magic Entertainment and Africa Magic Movies 1

So there are actually 5 new channels, 3 movie channels and 2 Africa Magic Channels. Nothing to get excited about there

So ja the article is close, it says 13 but its actually 5, who's counting

The universal channels are not in HD, but the "on demand" recordings are. Same as Series.

As well as this, the new movie channels do not replace Mnet Stars and action from what the article says. MM1 and MM2 are being replaced. This is evident by the fact that there is an Mnet Action + channel in the new lineup. The DSTV article says this, too.

The Universal channels are in HD, they will be SD/HD simulcast like M-Net

ah, fair enough, so 3 new movies channels. This wont mean new content though

Typical MyBB sensational headline writing. Are they on DSTV payroll?
No new channels!

See Multichoice has been rolling out training/info sessions in PE & East London for installers.
Most probably for this, so would this require a new bigger dish to access new satellite?

WTF is wrong with some of you? Many bitch that DSTV goes up and up without anything new. Here they are going to be using a massive amount of more bandwidth at epic cost to air these extra HD channels and you still moan?

I think it's awesome! I can't wait for every channel to be in Hd. As it is, I tend to avoid watching stuff on the SD channels as once you have tasted HD, it is very tough to go back to grainy SD.

/rant off

#iceQB: they are changing the HD compression format at the end of the year (I hope I have the terminology right) and any dish less than 85cm will start to experience picture break-up on any "less than perfect weather" day

Nah. They are not doing it at the end of the year... but it's going to happen someday. They will be changing the compression and modulation. The modulation changing from QPSK to 8PSK, is the reason for the bigger dish.

@flashsa saw them at the Regent Hotel today.
Didn't quite have time to ask them exactly what its all about.

Old house had a 60cm dish. Told the installer not to rock up with anything smaller than 90cm at my new place. Signal is much improved over the 60.
