New DSTV HD Decoder

I only want a decoder that can do HD. I don’t want PVR functions. I am sure they can do that for much, much cheaper.

So then.... Sounds interesting..

What setup would i then need for Xtraview?
if i use
- SATCR LNB?
- DUAL LNB?

In both cases, just an LNB splitter (if you don't already have one) and another decoder.

Just spoke to my installer. If you currently have a PVR 1 with a dual LNB you will need a 2>4 splitter to extraview in this new smaller HD PVR. Total cost of installation including the splitter should be R600-R800.

So this means I can get HD into my house for under 3grand now when this new decoder launches - Superb!

Kheiron, what you then saying is....
SATCR will only save you one extra cable from the dish? as they both need multiswitch 2 x 4?
i thought SATCR didnt need multiswitch? ie. 2 outputs from LNB, 1 HDPVR, other SD Decoder!

Can I ask an silly question! As I've never had PVR before I'd like to know do you have to pay the R60 monthly fee just for the record feature, I'm really not interested in rewinding live tv and all that! Like I said this is a silly question so some of you will probably have a good chuckle @ this :)

I require a bit of insight here.

I currently have two televisions: one 720p and one old SD that is used in the gymn. I have a standard DSTV decoder, which was already getting old when Mick Jagger sniffed cocaine from a groupie's butt crack for the first time; one of those sold before dual view, PVR, extra view or HD (the decoder, not the groupie). Once the signal leaves this contemptible decoder, it is split to the two televisions; therefore you can only watch the same channel on both the television sets. Despicable, I know.

Should I buy this new decoder discussed in this thread, will I be able to do use the old decoder for the old SD television and watch something different via the new decoder on the HD television? If that is possible, will I need the following:
  • An extra LNB on the dish, bringing it to a total of two (approximate price of the device and installation?)
  • Pay an increased monthly subscription for the PVR functionality (if so, how much is this?)
  • Pay a further increased monthly subscription for the Extra View functionality (if so, how much is this?)
  • New cabling (I still have the old coaxial, I think it is called)
  • Anything else?

Any and all help will be highly appreciated.

R60 fee for PVR functionality and R60 for HD channels - but if you have both you only pay 1x R60 extra per month

If your current decoder is that old is it not compatible with extraview.

You will need:
*new HD PVR decoder (either the daddy or the new baby one)
*1110 cheapie decoder for the second TV
*upgraded LNB with extra wire coming into the house
* 2> 4 splitter.
*Extra R60 per month for Extraview

EDIT: and use the current decoder as a doorstop ;)

Apologies, you are correct. The SATCR LNB will negate the requirement for a 2 x 4 splitter as you can simply run a separate cable straight from the LNB to the SD decoder. I guess it then boils down to which option would be cheaper/easier for you to implement.

no man, if you already have dual view the installer doesn't have to install anything. just buy the splitter yourself, plug the two cables from your dual lnb in, and then you'll have 4 or 6 (depending on the splitter) cables coming out of the splitter, so you just plug those into your sd-pvr (2 cables) and the hd pvr (2 or 4 cables depending on the pvr).

just buy those 4 or 6 cables that go from the splitter to the decoders. should be available wherever you buy the splitter.

Thanks for the quick reply. Oh, and I have better doorstops.

If i had a DUAL LNB then the obvious choice would have been to just get multiswitch 2 x 4!
but since i have old single LNB....

R1000 SATCR and one less cable vs R300 multiswitch + Dual LNB R400 one extra cable mmmm.....

Will have to check if all the cable will fit throught the condi if i go Dual LNB!
cos currently i run 2 x speaker cable and 1 coax thru there!

Would i need 'heartbeat cable' from HDPVR to SD decoder, hence extra cable going back up condi!?

I wonder what would happen if you connected the new decoder to a single lnb? would I still be able to watch hd? obviously loose pvr functionality and extra view but couldnt care! what abou the old hd decoder with 4 inputs on single lnb?

good question

yeah but you need to get a new thingy, with a dual feed, on the dish which costs about R700? the white camera shaped thingy i cant remember the name

so you looking at something between R2500 and R3000, i really dont see the difference
Twin LNB is closer to R300

I bet you have never had a PVR before

Its R65 now, its all one & the same so you cant pick & choose which functions you want

Current HDPVRs will function on 1 input with view 1 channel but they wont boot up with only 1 tuner active, so you need to at least confuse it by doing a "1x4" split
New HDPVR, my guess is you would lose the TV guide & record 1
But as I said above, you cant have a PVR & not use PVR functions, well you can but its crazy
