Someone's cousin got the tender.

I have no words to describe how much I already hate the 2-pin plugs that you always have to search for an adaptor! There must be a special place in hell for the person who designed this new "3-pin" plug!!

They are actually trying to get this plug adopted in several countries. Brazil has adopted it. If every plug in the house was this new "3-pin" plug, all your 2 pin plugs would be compatable, i.e. no need for adaptor's, which is beautiful, unless you get one of those large 2 pin round plugs.

The problem is the "unless"... As soon as there is an unless involved you are just again creating the same issue as now, but with somebody getting a tender to create the new issue..

Agreed, its like they're going from bad to worse.

Exactly how is this "safer"?

:erm: Kids cant stick their fingers in for one...

The economic element will mean more local manufacturing and jobs, while the technical aspect means South African will have the safest plug and socket system in the world — it will apparently be impossible for a child to put their finger in a socket and get shocked.

its safer because its New...

I'm not against a new plug configuration really, but to push ANOTHER unique design down our throats is just irritating in the extreme.

I have no issue if they are safer, AS LONG AS they make proper contact at all times. Most 2-prong plugs have to be fiddled with which generally means people cut them off within 5 minutes.

Stock up now on normal plugs gents, so you can convert the new-age appliances back to normal plugs. :D

Where can I buy one of those quadruple wall mounted mains sockets? I think that the current SA 15A plug is far too large and not well suited to connecting multiple modern electronic devices. Just compare the size of our multiplug adapters with those from the US/Japan.

Can I just say, in my 32-years alive, I have never read even 1 report or heard of 1 person that stuck their fingers in a electrical outlet.

Haha my mom told me not to put my fingers in, so I fetched my younger sister and stuck her finger in... luckely for her not in the live one haha..

why are we not just adopting the european standard?? why are we following the brazilians when most of our electronics comes from europe??
definitely seems like some family member got a tender here

Each day, nearly 7 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for electrical shock or burn injuries caused by tampering with a wall outlet. - See more at: http://www.esfi.org/index.cfm/page/Injury-and-Fatality-Statistics/pid/12015#sthash.2G6GFMxh.dpuf

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 70 percent of child-related electrical accidents occur at home, when adult supervision is present. - See more at: http://www.esfi.org/index.cfm/page/Injury-and-Fatality-Statistics/pid/12015#sthash.2G6GFMxh.dpuf
USA but relevant here.

Why not adopt the Swiss standard? Would that not be much easier? Looks identical.
