Good day,

I'm in need of a new Laptop. ol' faithful is starting to show it's age now. The i3 can't keep up anymore.

Ideally I want the following:

Quad core i7 processor
SSD + 1TB mechanical HDD - I'm more than willing to buy and put the SSD in myself (I don't like hybrid hard drives, so don't even suggest it)
16GB RAM
17.3" 1080P display
Dedicated GPU (GT640M or the ATI alternative)

Is there anything out there that will be worth while?

Got my friend a Dell Inspiron N3737 4th gen i7-4500U processor, 17.3" HD+, HM77 chipset, 8G RAM, 1TB Sata, HD 887OM 2GB GDDR5, Windows 8 single language for R11500 with 1yr next business day on-site warranty. Great value for money & with the extra cash in your budget you can make some nice upgrades.

I'd prefer not to buy second hand... Scared of buying someone else's problems...

I always do. I stick to Dell and make sure it has balance of NBD left. Sorted.
Most of them have around 2 years left.
Currently I have an XPS 15 I paid R8k for (retail R25k) and an XPS 13 I paid R3.5k for (retail R23k). Can't beat that. And they both got NBD until 2015 still.

Issue is, those are 15.6", and don't do 1080p. They don't have 4 ram slots, and they don't have 2 HDD bays (3 if you count in the msata slot). I don't care about graphics that much, if I really want to play games, I'll use my R25K gaming rig. All I want to do is play a bit of Dota at medium, or high settings. The rest of the time I'll use it for programming, and a little multi media.

Only laptop I can suggest is the HP envy 17 but it is 3k out of your price range.

has everything you want except the ssd which you could probably change the one 1tb hardrive with one.

Hoping to find similar advice

Also searching for a powerful laptop in similar price range therefor I can appreciate your post. During my quest for a similar spec'd laptop I have found it next to impossible to get a 17" screen with Haswell quad core i7 and FHD at a better price than what the other posters have already advised. If you are really not concerned about the graphics then you might have to sacrifice the FHD for the rest of the specifications. Do bear in mind that a more powerful discrete graphics card can also assist with some of the more CPU intensive tasks.

You would not find a more powerful graphics card than Nvidia GTX 765M in any notebook for under R15,000 period. (hoping someone can prove me wrong, btw) - Look at reviews on GPUBoss.

That is one dull looking laptop to be honest.

1. Matter of opinion
2. Looks were not on the OPs list of things to have.

Whistle that is definitely a killer price, I'd much rather go with a big international company that I know for a fact will supply me with quality support. I'm not insulting anyone working at Mustek, but at this point, if I'm going to blow this use amount of money on a laptop, I'll rather go with Quality above quantity.
