Considering what we signed up for when we agreed to a 24 month contract, anything under a 300 gig soft cap is going to make a lot of people angry. DSL users can always upgrade to a bigger cap the following month if they run out - we sadly do to have that option. 100 to 200 gigs will simply not be enough for many users doing Netflix and the like.

The lowest soft cap i would consider reasonable would be 300 gigs. Perhaps, 200 gigs daytime with uncapped between 12 and 7am would also work, but even that is not what we signed up for.

In saying that i would welcome a crack down on people doing 500 gigs or more considering the slow speeds between 6 and 10PM every night.

You can't just pick arbitrary limits based on your own usage and then demonise people using 500GB as "excessive" or saying less than your needs is not enough. Says who? Those people would argue the same.

It's based on pricing and what the technology can handle. Slow internet at night clearly shows the towers don't have infinite bandwidth. 500 gigs would cover 99.9% of users.

We could give every user 50GB to use and you would still have that problem as they would all use it at exactly the same time, namely peak time.

True. The point of 150 users per tower was to avoid this. Thus telkom didnt plan properly imho.
Problem may be rolling it out now beyond original towers and using normal cell frequency.
In any case I expect to use it for what I acquired it - netflix streaming.

But here are a few things you need to know:

Uncapped wireless broadband is really uncapped for almost all applications and uses. These include email, browsing, streaming traffic like video, music, YouTube, AppleTV, Box Office, Netflix, VPN, VOIP, real time online gaming, backups and gaming downloads.

For these you will never be capped and throttled. This means consumers will enjoy the full benefit of a truly unlimited experience with Telkom's LTE Uncapped service. Telkom's 50GB fair usage policy cap ONLY applies to Bit Torrent traffic via peer to peer and news servers protocols (NNTP).

Customers will enjoy full speeds on the 50GB FUP bundle between 12am – 6pm and will only be throttled on the speeds between 6pm – 12am which is Telkom's peak period on the network. Full connection speeds will be maintained during peak periods for general browsing, online gaming and video streaming and the customer experience will not be affected.

The speed throttling of peer-to-peer traffic has been effected to ensure that Telkom maintains a good user experience for all users on the base station and that Telkom’s network performance during peak network periods is not compromised. A 10GB FUP applies to the uncapped Wi-Fi bundle and subscribers will be required to link a secondary mobile device to their account via their My Telkom Mobile account as the Wi-Fi bundle can only be consumed at Telkom mobile’s public Wi-Fi hotspots. Acceptable Use Policy applies to abuse of service.

They really put emphasis on "uncapped" especially NEVER CAPPED...So that's basically false then if they decide to introduce a FUP for this. I'm sure something can be done, they should have made mention of this in the beginning before anyone committed to a 24 month contract

I'm fine with the 50gig cap on P2p but other than that , I won't be happy... Also if the FUP they introduce is very low like someone said here

I haven't received that SMS. I average around 200-250 GB a month based on 10 connected devices. The bulk of that is streaming with the occasional download now and again. I don't use P2P so I've never checked what the stats look like for that.

It doesn't seem there was any rhyme or reason behind who all got sent the sms. I'm happy to wait it out, but I will come out swinging if things suddenly go to pot next month. Middle of the month falls within two weeks' leave for me, so I'll have the luxury of making myself an incessant annoyance in Telkom's ear.

From Telkom

"In relation to your inquiry with regards to the LTE service, please note that indeed the service is meant for streaming, however high data consumption compromises the experience of fellow users and it also results in one consuming more data than the set monthly rental.

Unlimited can be interpreted in such a way that you are not restricted to any volume of data, however consumption should be at a reasonable rate, hence the Fair User Policy is applied if the usage patterns suggests negligence or excessive data usage."

What is reasonable rate?
More data than set monthly rental?

I got the message but I have no idea how to interpret it. What should I cut down on? I use seedboxes (all in the daytime), Netflix streaming, lots of YouTube, and do my work on this line. I haven't broken their FUP according to the way it's stated (uncapped is truly uncapped). I wish they could give some clearer feedback on it.

Seed box is your first mistake

My usage high this month. Already over 500gb but due to reinstalling some steam games.
They can throttle all non-streaming in peak time.

I still don't get why seedboxes are the main culprit. Is it not just streaming? I don't use them but surely if something is downloaded and you stream it to your device like a roku through a seedbox client; it's still streaming? Or am I missing something?

Content isn't cached like YT for example.

Probably a CDN server somewhere. I've noticed not so popular YT videos take a bit longer to load.

interesting, but still it needs to stream from the CDN server to our homes, this still takes bandwidth ?, local is obviously better than international, but this should still not influence download speed, and isnt the FUP being implemented to increase bandwidth speed?

I assume cost is also a factor. Data from a CDN is probably cheaper, and yes if cached locally it will much cheaper.
