New LTE AUP from September 2016

Seems the systems coped as they ran with this for a while, including the hogs doing 2.5TB, they just seemed to panic and bring in a stupendous throttle cap as from this month with little or no warning. Now with a bit more wisdom maybe they can still keep most of us as customers but I can't see a family with 2 kids and a fair amount of Netflix and Youtube use less than 600GB/month, excluding game downloads, PC updates and off course internet and e-mails. A product was advertised, the pain should not be for the customer if Telkom had a clueless marketing department that clearly did not involve people who knew the numbers.

Yep

I don't know the amount of backhaul bandwidth so I can't answer, but why would Telkom sell 150 slots per tower? Surely someone at Telkom would have stood up and said "the tower must be able to handle all 150 hitting the tower at 30-70Mb/s simultaneously in order for this to be sustainable" before it went to market?

Yeah would be nice to see what is the towers max throughput not on user level but actual tower max.

You gotta wonder WTF Telkom went "Deal of the Month" with this product? Before then, only the bottom of the telkom.co.za site gave a clue of this product so sales were largely as a result of word of mouth, online articles (myBB) and getting lucky by seeing it on the Telkom site. Did the DOTM break the camel's back?

Telkom isn't concerned about the end users speed, if they were they wouldn't have put a cap of 250gb, they would have rather have had a rolling window period.

I think they do care about peak time speeds, they just didn't put any thought into their first attempt at a fix.

Remember when their usage averages told them 3gb is enough for the average DSL user? Well the same shallow boneheaded analysis tells them 200 gigs is enough for 90% of LTE uncapped users. We see this silliness all the time. It's probably the same reason the springboks kick away all their ball year after year, the data tells them every X number of kicks results in a try. So obviously the answer is to kick more!

The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. You see it all the time in big companies.

Reality is that usage patterns don't really change medium term so at the start of the month when there's a reset in your data usage you'll simply be Netflixing and Youtubing as usual. The problem comes in that if the system is really falling over then it will fall over every month for the first two weeks at least until people reach their "new stupendous cap". The fix is to find a way to migrate the top heavy users so that the usage over the month from word go is sustainable, which it is as the system coped until now but they need to manage the hogs running TB's.

An AUP and FUP has no meaning if it's a moving target. In fact the sooner Telkom posts a breakdown of how they calculate the AUP and FUP with a model based on the product they marketed the sooner the confusion will end. Here's the problem though, selling a product as a video streaming data offer that will NEVER be throttled and never be capped in a general household with at least 2 adults and assuming at least 2 or 3 kids will be where Telkom can't provide a FAIR model to cap at 250GB. So again the NCC will have ANOTHER charge to throw at Telkom, it will stick as will the others.

I posted previously that a sliding scale should be the solution but maybe there are other suggestions. As I said earlier, Telkom with a bit of wisdom can retain most of us as clients but if reason is not applied on their side I cannot stay a client, I've now been burnt 3 times by Telkom, one that closed a small trading business of mine.

All they need to do is shape everything but streaming, browsing, and small downloads between 6PM and 12 everyday. Decent speeds outside of those hours even with multi tb abusers running wild shows you they don't really need to worry about how many gigs normal people are using on most towers. If that isn't quite enough they can start shaping Netflix and co down to the equivalent of 1 or 2 HD streams per account during peak time.

Sounds more than reasonable to me.

Yippee!!! Back to full speed.

Don't know if this is just a temporary fix but I'm not throttled for the time being. I'm at 230GB and my speeds are back to 80% of Max

What does MyTelkom say?

That's awesome news and a HUGE relief for our household, my wife can continue with her business, thank you!

The question to ask right now though is: What are the AUP or FUP rules now?

Didn't the throttled users have some notification?

Nope only had an SMS on my LTE router last month asking to reduce usage or i might risk throttling makes me wonder if this is a 10 day rolling window thing now or telkom's shaper or whatever is just offline guess we will find out tomorrow
