Let me put it this way:

Placing a dead man's face on the note = remebering/memorial
Placing a live and political figure on the note = Political

I would have had no problem whatsoever with Mandala's face on the note if he was gone for 10+ years cause that is remembering a great man Placing him on the note while he is alive opens it up for abuse as the next person in power can easy change the notes to his face.

In other words is placing ground rules sothat it can not be abused in the future.

I liked the Big 5 theme for it's neutrality. However, if we had to put a person on our notes, it could only be Mandela.

I do wonder what happens long term though. He's such a hero that I don't see a way for any later notes not to have his face on them.

I cant think of a better South African to have on our notes. The fact that President Mandela and his achievements are going to be immortalized like this will hopefully aspire many future South Africans to become the person he is. Really cool.

Or maybe it is obvious ANC propaganda on our money! I feel that they should issue the Rhino with a horn chopped off, that ought to send a statement.

In my opinion people who idolize Mandela aren't reading history objectively, they are reading propaganda.

Maybe because he authotised THIS...

You guys need to get over this already.
The national party led by a violence and by institutionalised terrorism. You were only supported by the west as long as the cold war was in existence. The fall of communism led to the almost immediate withdrawal of that support and you were forced to cooperate with the people you enslaved.

It's democracy now, they have the numbers and they have the memory. So live with it. You reap what you sow.

I assume you`re Australian from your nick, you should get off your high horse if you are. The indigenous here have the numbers for a reason.

Hoo boy...

The SPRINGBOK CLUB was founded in 1996 as a merger between the WHITE RHINO CLUB and the RHODESIAN FORUM, and was formally constituted at the beginning of 1999 in London. The organisation advocates and works towards the re-establishment of civilised rule in Southern Africa. It holds regular monthly meetings in the London area featuring interesting guest speakers reporting on the current situation in Southern Africa, as well as other patriotic speakers who support its basic aims and objectives. It also has a growing branch structure both in the UK and around the western world, and many of these branches also hold regular social and informal get-togethers.

Oh please!

Unless they are putting the ANC logo or a copy of the Freedom Charter on the new notes they aren't politicising!

Mandela was a president for all South Africans, I mean the DA even put Mandela on their 2009 election pamphlets ffs!

Why don't Democrats in America protesting the $5 and $50 notes for having Republican presidents?

Because most people in the US respects them for who they were and what they did regardless of the party they belonged too!

Well Said.

For me, Mandela is not a ANC person, he is a South African, first and foremost, who helped our country heal and grow up.

His face has been on coins before, why the big aversion to it now?

pffffft

This has more to do with the ANC wanting to get a bit of emotion stirring than have the image of Mandela on our money. By the time the new notes are in circulation the elections will be out. They are good at promoting propaganda.

Either way, I thought they were against having Jan van Riebeeck on the money for the exact same reason of having some kind of 'neutrality'.

I think the Mandela notes are really cool, it is something I wanted Zuma to do, the freedom fighter deserves the fame and glory.

Although people are going to go all stingy on these notes (like the R5 Mandela coin which I have only had once in my possession since it had been released)

So keen to get my hands on those notes :D

Not exactly limited edition, so you will use them for years to come... well till the a dictator decide to change them to his face.

Mandela was declared a terrorist by many governments including the UK and USA.

I don't really hate mandela but he IS a terrorist and he DID authorise the killings caused by the Church street bomb.
He never wanted to renounce the use of violence. De Klerk begged him to renounce the use of violence so that peacefull negoations can procedd and that he can be released from jail long before he was. He refused. He is a terrorist and so is the ANC.
The ANC is not a "political party", it is a marxist terrorist organisation. Got it ?

EDIT: And come with the “One man's terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” argument.
