The only complaints I have is the price and the number of repeats. For sport it is great... but if you are not much of a sport fan like me then what is the point really? I'm not going to pay R500.00 a month for Discovery and History Channel alone. The price is not that great compared to the rest of the world. A typical comparable satellite service in most other countries is either half the price or double the number of channels.

The article does not justify the heading you gave it. You journo's often do that and especially when news is slow. All that info actually means nothing - coz by launch date , they prolly gonna drop / chop and change packages.

Can you also explain 2nd Q 2009 - does that mean 30 June 2009....hey its still June.

Hey man,

Something that you have to understand is that 'us journo's' don't always give the articles headings. Often the final product is different from the original due to the editing process. Although my name is on the byline the headline, publishing, editing etc are not all my sole responsibility. At My Broadband, just like any other publication, we have a system whereby stories are published.

2nd quarter 2009 would typically be from April-June.

+1, and while DSTV's coverage of local sport is superb, there is alot of international stuff we miss out on. How often do you see snooker on DSTV? That is aired on the terrestrial channels in the uk. But all that aside, competition is never a bad thing. Cant wait!
 
Supersports coverage is one of the best worldwide (Foxtel in australia can't even compare), they show pretty much everything I want (Cricket, Soccer - EPL/FA/Uefa - not just selected games, F1,Rugby) atleast.
My concern is the ODG won't get the same rights to sports that SS has, which would suck, also what about HD? I want to watch 2010 on HD, SS can give me that (albeit at the cost of a 3.3K HD PVR =/). ODG better have a plan for HD.

As for the rest of the channels, I don't care much, give me a sports only package that shows what SS does (with some HD) @ R200pm and I'm sold :)
 
Until pay TV providers allow the viewer to pay per view at a realistic price, tech savvy customers will be unhappy. DSTV is nothing more than an avalanche of rubbish, in which there are the occasional gems. The new operator will also need to have a PVR which allows easy transfer of content from the hard drive to a DVD. But this will not happen soon, thanks to the dinosaurs in Hollywood who do not accept that the digital age has made their view of copyright irrelevant. Personally, Iresent paying a price out of all proportion to real cost, simply to make the mega-rich even richer.
 
First of all PVR's should not be provider specific... the provider must just supplie a xml guide feed.. so any pvr will work...

has anyone ever lived in the state's, you watch more adverts than tv. a 30min show will take an hour to air.. they are constantly on repeat... the even have duplicated channels which are 1 hour offset from eachother..

and one channel will play the same movie 3 times in a row..

just my two cents..
 
If they bring in SciFi channel - I will subscribe. Really miss that channel.:)

No doubt about it, without sport i would not have DSTV myself, even the series i rather watch on my divx player because the ads kill me on mnet.

Jelly they have loads of snooker man, they even have darts, their coverage of international sport is superb. Obviously if you want to watch american sport then you must tune into espn for that.
They have rugby, soccer, cricket, f1, moto gp, darts, snooker, rally the list goes on and on but you'll be amazed they even having fishing :p

Like seriously, this article says everything and nothing. we all know that they are going to launch at some point in time and are secretly hoping that they kick MC where it hurts for years of ripping us off. The only bit of actual info is the decoder price, which is predictable coz it has to be inline with current pricing. I guess we all are waiting with bated breath for what content they will have and I guess they are keeping that pretty close to their chest. I will be optimistic about this because being a South African means that any competition is good competition :)
 
Give me a couple of good movie, series and documentary channels and a lower price and I'd be sold. I don't see why I should pay DSTV's crazy prices when I'll never watch sports, news, cartoons (the modern ones are rubbish) or music TV.
