New PC advice please

I think I found the culprit...

Looks like I'll have to send all 4 sticks of ram back to prophecy as they were technically 1 product.

Have you tried setting the memory latencies to 9-9-9-27 or anything higher than 27?

No, but it's better if I don't mess with those kind of settings.

I know in the screenshot above it shows it's testing all 8gb ram, but I also did take them all out and put 1 in at a time until only 1 stick of ram kept giving errors, so that should definitely point to a faulty stick of ram.

At the moment I'm running on 2 x 2gb (excluding the faulty stick ofc) instead of the full 4 x 2gb and everything's stable.

I didn't make that suggestion for no reason ;) Draconia2's RAM timings was on auto (9-9-9-24), and he experienced lots of issues with his PC because of it.

I suggested that he change it to 9-9-9-27 and that fixed everything. You can read here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/304727-fears-cpu-is-the-culprit

I do hear you that you don't want to mess about with those settings, because it can be dangerous if you don't have the technical experience.
Someone (at Twilight Gaming forums) recently wrote off his graphics card, after I suggested that he change his memory timings :( I'm still not sure how the heck that happened though.

The only time that it would be acceptable for the seal to be broken is when Prophecy Shop clearly stated that the item was opened on their website, in which case they would also sell it for less.

I get what you saying that changing it might fix everything, but it just irks me that only 1 of the 4 ram sticks gives memory errors. I would be willing to try changing those timings, but only if all the ram gave problems.

In my mind - if only 1 of them gives errors, then that specific 1 inherently has a problem. Even if changing the timings fixes it, that 1 stick will always be the stick that first started giving problems.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I would rather not mess around with settings like that. I've never overclocked anything before or changed advanced settings like the ones you speak of, I've thought about it, but I'll rather ignore that though until I feel a lot more confident.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed with prophecy though because the box which all the ram came in seal was broken... I should have checked the ram from the start on account of that.

Corsair or Kingston RAM, right?

Don't worry, they're opened because their supplier puts its own barcodes on the RAM so the RAM can be returned without invoices. Makes Prophecy's and your life easier. :)

Yeah it's 4 x 2gb corsair ram. Any idea how long the process takes to swap the ram out?

I was thinking of asking them to exchange it for 2 x 4gb kingston ram instead. Not that I have a problem with corsair, but I think there'll be better air flow between the ram that way (the mobo manual has a warning that when all 4 slots are used, you must have very good cooling)

Or you could get a RAM cooler. But yes, it's true that fewer sticks is better.

Check these out though:

Vizo armada 2 RCL-201 dual-fan memory cooler with blue led , for , 2X40x40mm blue led fan , 4500rpm , 20dbn , 13.86x2 CFM
Zalman zm-RC1000 memory cooler , movable Structure ( up/down + right/left) to prevent interference with other mb component , anodized aluminum , 2X60mm fan ( 2700rpm , 21-25dBa ) - with extra height - ideal for 3x memory
Kingston RHX/KHX-fan memory cooler , 2X60mm fan with blue led , 25dBA - ideal for 3x memory
Corsair CMXAF1 Airflow 1 memory cooler , 3X40mm fan - with extra height - ideal for 2x memory

At the moment I have this ram, so I was thinking of exchanging it for 2 of these kingston sticks, so I get more air flow and less heat without having to buy a memory cooler. It doesn't seem like there's any difference besides the brand name. They both say 1.5v CL9. So will they both perform the same?

Yip.

This is cheaper, website claims out of stock and no ETA but those are only estimations and are often inaccurate.

Ok, I got the new RAM (2x4GB) and everything seems to be fine so far :p

Does anybody know where I can buy those brass/copper screws that connect the motherboard to the case? I have a bunch of them but the thread that goes into the case is too small ie. it doesn't screw in, it just "falls" in.
Have a look at this picture. I think I need the one that's 4th from the left, at the moment I have the one that's 4th from the right and it's too small.
