It IS faster, don't get me wrong. It's just not so much that it can be considered future-proofed.

And going back in the thread I realized there's no SSD, which is a big mistake. So it needs some reconsideration.

ponder, can't you sell that Q6600 system for like R1500 and use that money towards? Then get a 128gb for say R870.

Then get a cheapo H81 board because I really can't see what you're doing that needs more power:

And since you've now got R3000 to spend on a CPU (calculated by your previous budget, 1400+1681 + 1500 - 870-700), how about a 4690k? Much better.

Nah, can't sell. But don't worry I intend getting a 128GB SSD a bit later on.

Why a K if I can't overclock it? You are right about the MB though as something fancy is not required, the old Q6600 is mated to a lowly G31 MB.

That AMD build minus chassis comes to R8958 so how about this build then,

MB - R637 - MSI Intel H81M-P33 H81
CPU - R2889 - Intel Core I5 4690 Processor 3.50Ghz
RAM - R976 - 2x Corsair Value Select A - 4GB DDR3 DRAM Desktop Memory - 1600Mhz
GPU - R2999 - Galax 96NPH8DVD9XX GeForce GTX 960 EXOC 2048MB GDDR5 128-bit
HDD - R758 - WD Blue 1TB 3.5 inch SATAIII
PSU - R599 - Super Flower SF-450P14XE(HX)
TOTAL: R8957

So that is R1 cheaper :D

I'd go with this build. Not worth investing in AMD right now, AM3+ socket is dead and the i5 would perform much better than an fx 6300 in gaming
 
If you don't care about the extra PCI slots and a USB3 header for connecting frontal USB3 slots if case has any then it's a good build. Note that's a micro-ATX motherboard.

Note there's a difference between MSI Intel H81M-P33 and H81-P33 (The ATX one).

Effectively you just pay for a higher clock rating. That's kinda the problem with overclocking, you pay extra for the K series, pay extra for a motherboard that can handle it and maybe better cooling.
But the money you spend there, can just be used to get a higher clocked CPU and run it stock.

Not too concerned about it. On the micro-ATX issue upside it means I can use that CM Silencio 352 chassis that I like! Maybe there's a slightly better MB out there for a R100-R200 more.

That's fine. Not getting a K series cpu as that would require an expensive MB capable of OCing, plus extra cooling which is more $$$. Not sure about the details but I've seen 4690s OCed to 4.1GHz via BCLK on cheap MBs, not expecting anything and would be happy at stock speed.

Yes there's a lot of extra expenditure involved with OCing a K series CPU. In many games the OC gains you nothing as the game is GPU dependent. This is obviously not true for all games but I reckon it would be ok for fps single player games which is what I'm after. Example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivmK3fVCB10

Either way I'm dumping the fx-6300 idea in favour of the i5-4690. cerebus thanks for fscking with my head and making me see the light, I owe you a beer.

I must say this thread has been very educational and full of input which is greatly appreciated. Amazed at the amount of views in such a short period.

I'm hoping we can establish a new budget system benchmark from it.

That seems much better ponder. Potterh does have a 4790 i7 for 2700 , might be worth considering but up to you.
 
GPU & PSU ordered&paid from Wootware. Will pull the trigger on the rest from AperturePC hopefully tomorrow.

If all goes well I'll have a new rig by the weekend.
 
Hopefully all the kit arrives tomorrow and I'll update this thread with info & pics.
