New PC for my son

come on guys, I am running a Gigabyte 7600 gt on my pc with no problems. Brilliant card. If I can get something similar, I will be more than happy.

Well, if you live in Jozi, I guess you could get this :

Motherboard: Asus P5KPL-AM SE

CPU : Intel Pentium 2.5 Dual Core E5200

RAM: 2GB DDRII-800

DVD drive: DVD Writer 22/12x DL (SAMSUNG) SATA

HDD: 320GB-7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA II (Samsung)

Graphics card: HD 4650 512MB PCI-E DUAL DVI-I / TVO LITE

Case : Midi Tower Case + 350W PSU - Coolermaster - Elite Cool


Cost: R2938 (about R200 odd more then the other pc)

Honestly, this would be a seriously monstrous pc for a lightie and a lot faster then the first one you posted... only thing is you have to build it, but I'm sure you could take the parts to another pc store or ask Pc-int to assemble it for you :). I assume you live in PTA, so PC-int isn't out of your range, perhaps you could make it a bit of a road trip :). As for the Nvidia 6150, um, unless your son is playing warcraft, it will choke on every game ;)

do what scotty says! 3D card is very important, and a 4850 aint half bad guy!

4850 will play almost all games on medium-to-high settings

4650 it is then! your son will be able to play 1/4 of the games on low settings

just kidding, hehe - 4650 still beats that onboard.....or ANY onboard for that matter :D
 
Great thanks for all your help, yeah scotty, I have been building PCs for most my life. Even built and ran my own online store selling pc and parts. Unfortunately, there's is not much money in it if you're a one man operation. I started working full time as an Oracle programmer and hence, lost touch with new technologies which changes daily.

I like to read reviews and get others people's opinions about new products and services.

I will check out all options mentioned here and report back.

Really at the budget you're talking about you can't get much... That R3k option is about the best you will get, end of story. i'm really surprised it's even possible to get those specs for so cheap.

Proposed rig:

- ASUS Intel X58, LGA1366 - P6T6 WS Revolution - motherboard : R4720
- Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition, overclocked to 4.0 GHz per core : R10,625
- CORSAIR® XMS3™ DOMINATOR 6GB(2GBx3) DDR3-1866 Memory(Desktop) : R4700
- GeForce GTX 285 in tri-SLI (1 Gb x3, R5000 x 3) : R15000

Total R35000, then i still need the other not so important stuff like 2 Tb harddrive, blue-ray writer, etc...

Yeah, I agree, a decent pc for R2500, imho it's a good deal.
 
it is a good deal - but scotty's suggestion is better.

if you love your kid, you won't take the easy way and buy a pre built system... go for scotty's suggestion man! it doesn't take THAT long to build it - pcint might even do it for you! (they are friendly folk that pcint)

even a 8500gt beats onboard

actually just get the pre-built - no mess no fuss, 2 year warranty, and a few extra's

it just struck me now that you don't seem to be the PC building type :o

Scotty's system is stronger with GFX but weaker on some parts - so yeah... just buy that pre-built :)
