New SAIX news server

Yea, why not, lets pay for the telephone line and the adsl line and the bandwidth and access to the news server.
YAY!

Next month ... you pay to do a google search!

i for one would gladly pay for a proper local news server that supports 8 connections with 200 day retention.

Goodie,.. a new news server.. just a pity local bandwidth is so expensive.. :( :( :( .. where can you buy cheap local bandwidth?

Considering the frustration of not being able to connect already, I will be willing to pay for the server. As long as the fees are not crazy. About R100 for 50 Gigs is just about okay: That is what is being charged overseas. And since Telkom has been providing the news-server for free, that cannot be seen as too low.

Buy a Telkom 3 gig account and in total you get nearly 42 gigs blended. About 5Gigs international and 37 gigs local. At R210 that works out at R5 a gig local (If you use everything for local).

So we now have a potential 3 local news servers ( 1 x IS 2 x SAIX) for a potential 4+ million people. i like them odds where do i sign up?
/sarcasm

I was thinking the same thing! I was away this festive season. Got back today and my 4mb line was also activated today! Check if nzb will download. Like a dream. Just like in the old days. When you press connect it instantly connects! Now this is how nzb's should be downloaded! :)

There should be unlimited accounts too. I mean local is cheap and paying a crazy amount extra just for usenet. Hmmm Ill go the torrent way then!

Hey guys, I know this might be a noob question, but I tried googling it and I couldnt find any helpful results.

What is a news server and how do you use it?

educate me - do other servers throttle speed per connection? when things where still good, i could get 400kB/s on 2 connections to SAIX. Possibly even one as well (i never checked). What added benefit does 8 connections give?

is the greatest problem with the servers not the 32connection band? how they believe they are helping out the rest of us ADSL users is still beyond me. It is a selfishness beyond all others in the SA space. It is even worse than Telkom tactics given that those people probably know the landscape of the SA ADSL environment.

That is what I was thinking. If you have a 4mb line, you could have a million connections but you still get at most circa 450 kilobytes per second maximum. In my experience, one connection was able to give me about 350 kilobytes and 2 gave me between 400 and 460 kilobytes. Clearly one connection is good enough and if you can have 2 connections that is better. I just don't see how having more than 2 connections helps you - Clearly it hurts others, but it does not help you either.
