Because nowadays one hardly gets full speed with just one or two connections(though I get full speed most of the time). Having more connections ensures that you will utilise the full speed of your ADSL line.

when i had giganews, i always have gotten 100% throughput for the duration of the download, 200 days retention and 8 max connections.

it was around R150 then for unlimited downloads p/m, which is really not that bad IF you get that kind of service, please do not confuse the crappy free newservers in RSA with proper paid news servers.

um, the info about the New NNTP server was posted on the Telkom Website and their Online notice board. I hardly think that posting it here (there have been several threads already), is going to kill it anymore. It is also all over NewsHost and BitFarm. So take a chill pill already! :rolleyes:

This is a free public server, there for anyone to use. If you want something for yourself alone go get a Giganews subscription.

Its a service provided to ALL saix dial up and ADSL users, it is like complaining that there is traffic on the Ben Schoeman highway...
 
I heard via someone that the first news server can only have 900 connections or something.

This one is nice... it's always fast.
 
It's already slower since MyBroadband posted the news. Before i got 2 connections and now i only get 1 :(

Sheesh 200 day retention. That's a LOT of storage space.. specially seeing as the high performance stuff is so damn expensive I don't think we'll ever see this in SA. Go have a look at the complete pricing per TB for carrier-grade storage... Last time I checked, it was in the region of R100k/TB. Since you want unlimited bandwidth... but realistically, let's say 100Mbps incoming.. then you are looking at about 0.7TB per day. So this little setup will cost R140m. Let's say R100m with volume discounts. I wonder how that cost would be recovered....

Storage is expensive, and the cooling of storage even more so.

I believe Google's biggest cost is storage & cooling?
 
well Google is the biggest consumer of electricity in the US and that's with their solar power... so yes, power and cooling is expensive.

I believe Google uses consumer grade storage though but in a heavily redundant design.
 
One thing I have seen with the new2 server, is that on my 384k line, I sometimes get a jump of 50k - 60k/s for a minute or so. In the middle of a downloading a file, and it usually happens are regular intervals. Interesting and fun to watch.

Grabit will do that. Your line can't transfer more than 39KB/sec no matter how much the software lies to you. It's just unloading it's file cache. Get a proper client that reports throughput properly..

or, maybe like a new highway running out of the way somewhere that nobody knows about and suddenly people notice it and then complain when people drive on it! :p

I wish there was another highway between Joburg and Pretoria! :(
