New The PC Build Thread

Aaah the LTE makes sense :-). Cause yeah I had games on HDD thinking hey load times aren't an issue, but some games it does matter even in game.
Cheapest 2tb (crazy to pay that for nand :( )

Anyways before I remove the old drive busy scanning and remapping sectors with victoria. Nearly half way done. So far no bad sectors, but 80 slow sectors and 1 slower sector.

BTW only finished copying at 1am last night :( fck me. Haven't done drive copies in ages.

...and R 2.5k for 2TB is soon going to be cheap. WD/Sandisk announced a 50% price hike for NAND pricing on Monday, which has not yet trickled down to SA. There's another 50% increase coming early-ish next year, so soon we'll be lucky to find 1TB drives for below R 3k :(

Shoo I paid less than that for my 2tb nvme three months ago, but still not too badly priced.

Not flushed with cash at the moment. Have R1k saved up so far. Will see next month. Tomorrow I have to go sort out my mom, they moved her from the hospital to rehab and they send a list of stuff that she needs while she is there. So won't be cheap.

How about helping a brother out. :p. Honestly M.2 drive is a wish list, Don't really need one. Have enough saved to get another 2 refurb drives, hoping to get better luck with a new batch. Still both drives are in great health, paid R573 for an enterprise drive and they give 6 months warranty.

As the audio engineer, let us know the sound quality :)
Ag they are more for the wife hey. I still love my HyperX ones, but only having one pair of headphones is a poo! And the fewer cables the better!

Hi Guys

My son is building his first gaming PC. He has saved birthday money and has a budget of ~R14000. I could loan him a little amount if need be. The last PC I build was 20 years ago and whilst I have a good understanding is basic principles I lack the knowledge on how to guide him to on what to tweak here and there to get the best bang for his buck. He plans to save some more and then add an entry level graphics card (Like a 5060) in the next year.

Here is the spec he has in mind -> https://builder.wootware.co.za/pc?selections=38254,40508,45543,50006,52810,51683,52531

Any suggestions more than welcome. The DDR prices are killing him ;(

Second hand parts maybe? As that isn't much of a PC without a GPU, if you're in Gauteng I've got a 1600af and 16GB of DDR4 3200mts RAM for cheap, though the 1600af isn't the best chip around anymore + you'll still need a mobo. You can get a decent GPU for the mean time.

There are a few kits on progenix that are well priced. Below plus a Case, nvme and PSU is a good deal.

R14k for AM5 is cutting it close and you are already cutting corners there.

Its a kid, a first PC and you can save with AM4.

suggesting a 5700g.. shame on you, far better to go for a 5600

5700 is just plain horrible, avoid
5700g has low l3 cache, stutter-fest if he plans on keeping it a good while / gen3 only
5700x is better than a 5600, but at a price

Pointless going with new AM4 now. building up a 2nd hand am4 could still be viable.

Just go for am5/ddr5 if going new.

edit: yes the 5600/5700x doesnt have igpu, so he will have to get a basic display card for now, or grab a cheapo rx580/1650 off carb till he can save up for a 9060xt at least

Sheesh even those kits have gone up in price. But it is a good price at this time, though a B840 motherboard is basically a B820, as it only supports PCI3

I believe that one has a pcie4 16x slot for the GPU.
