New The PC Build Thread

There are a few kits on progenix that are well priced. Below plus a Case, nvme and PSU is a good deal.

This looks like a very good options, thanks a lot!

R14k for AM5 is cutting it close and you are already cutting corners there.

Its a kid, a first PC and you can save with AM4.

He started with AM4 but then thought AM5 could at least get him some future upgrades.

The idea is he will start with a iGPU and play Roblox type games and then when he adds a card he will move onto the more serious stuff.

From what I can see is it is this board -> https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B840M-D2H
So yes it has a pcie4 slot.

The nice thing is the two M2 slots, he can start with a 512GB nvme and then add another later on.
Not a bad price for 1tb nvme

Honestly you only need 1 m.2 slot for the boot drive, 2 is a bonus but SATA SSD later on is perfectly fine use case.

I have tweaked your build a little, cheaper lower CL ram and added a better m.2 and a 9600.

Yay Drives swaps and copying done, Sigh had to go fish out the fans from the new case only needed two, the drives were getting really toasty closing in on 50 on the 1 and 40 on the others.

The two old drives Is moving to the new case. Till replaced with new drives and the old drives will be relegated to external enclosure or maybe a NAS, a NAS would be ideal

This is also looks great thanks. I thought you had to purchase a dual channel kit.
The MAXSUN board concerns me a bit but I am probably being too pedantic. Wifi for "free" is great!

Nothing wrong with the motherboard it is a really good brand. Unless you are overclocking, you don't really need ram out of the same batch, two sticks purchased separately, will still work in dual channel. Yeah 9600x is the boss.

Also the power supply you selected is sucky.

Which power supply brands should he be going for? He said the MSI MAG is trusted and 650W would be enough for a 5060.
The Antec one has a higher power rating but my son keeps going on about this bible spreadsheet where he said it was poorly rated.

Bronze will be fine since his dad will foot the electricity bill and he's unlikely to run a 5090 any time soon.

The thing is with PSU's you want overhead, 150watt to 200watt. Always get a little overhead, a PSU that runs 60% -70% load is better than a PSU than runs at 80% - 100%. Take the recommended PSU and add 100-150 watts over and above what you need.

Like this ( the OEM is helly, really decent OEM that has been around for a few years) The 7 year warranty doesn't hurt either. Given the 5060 and future expansion this would be my next choice. This is ideal because of ATX 3.x support., the other PSU is older ATX specification not really suited to modern GPU's to be honest.

PSU lists are great guidelines but they aren't always 100% up to date, PSU manufactures do revisions of their products from time to time. Yes antec do have a little bit of a hit and a miss with their PSU's, either one is pretty solid for a low power GPU anything above that look else where.

Damn that's a good price on a 750w modular

Can you please help me understand why your nvme is better? The WD seems to be faster

He has settled on the progenix 9700x upgrade kit and the 750w modular psu. Just need to choose the nvme and final case and we done !

And that nice PSU has just sold out! We went back to order and it’s gone.
Any other suggestions for an PSU with ATX 3.1 support ( I assume this is important)

It has a cooling heatsink. contrary to believe nvme drives do get hot and can degrade performance and longevity. It isn't a deal break, just make sure the case has decent airflow which will go a long way.

Also the 512gig is slower than the 1tb drive....just FYI. If the WD is faster in the 512gig variant

Both of them are pretty terrible at 100-110tbw, they will work, just dont expect them to last long.

For 500-512gb drives look for at least 300TBW lifespan

It is a R150.00 more but best bang for buck with modular. It has both 6+2 connectors and 12vHPWR cables.

Will snoop around a bit more. But after this bracket it is 2k + A PSU

What about this one -> https://progenix.co.za/FSP-VITA-BD-...nze-PCIe-5-1-12VHPWR-12V-2x6-ATX-3-1-PSU-750w

Little cheaper as we see slowly climbing the spec creep ladder even if I know a good psu will last a few upgrade cycles.

FSP is a good brand as wel, if you are happy with it being non modular. It is pretty decent. It is a C tier. I wouldn't run a 5070ti on it for example, but XX60 class card no issues.

FSP has lower quality components, antec is honestly the better bet, I didn't consider the FSP because it is a lesser quality PSU still decent but you can do better.

Antec is ranked higher between B and C tier. Both have 5 year warranties. Personally the antec over the FSP.

You can Ask @Progenix Oj101 him self.

If the antec is out of the question

MSI Mag will also do just fine, only really difference between ATX3.1 and 3.0 is a change to the HPWR connector. it is backward compatible.
