New The PC Build Thread

Given that AM5 is ending it's final phase/s and seems more stable than it used to be.... it looks like 2025/6 might be the year to give team red a shot. Intel is REALLY dropping the ball with their e-core experiment.

Now with new 5000 series CPUs I am curious whether AM4 will be scaled a bit up. My only real issue with this is that AM4 is the bottom, and AM5 is the top. AM5 is then likely to remain expensive. I appreciate that AMD is extending AM4's longevity, but the market is being over saturated with SKUs. I don't know what their, everyone's demand analysis looks like.

I am going to wait until the 800 series boards hit the market, and then purchase either a 850 or 870. I don't think that the 600 series prices will reasonably drop, well, I hope it does.

I have a real problem actually with this new models released every year thing, it's irrational fragmentation leading to the general market simply disengaging.

AM4 is still good but I would not use money on it now unless I am desperate, AM5 on the other hand is massively overpriced not in CPU's but in mobos and memory. It used to be that CPU's were the expensive budget problem.

I don't really see AM4 getting any new mobo's but it can happen.... expensive as it will be I think the 800 series will be a gamechanger especially with JEDEC having recently doubled which is bound to cause an overclocking shakeup of some sort.... RAM is confusing these days.

Every time I start looking to upgrade my PC, looking at the total price for the MB, CPU, RAM et all, I think to myself: "this isn't too bad of a price to upgrade". Then I get to the GFX card and say nope and abandon the whole thing. :(

Yup, same thing. PC is 6-7 years old and I'd love to upgrade, but it's not cheap

I am surprised how no-one has made an in-depth Intel video. Some who made videos about AMD's announcement at Computex said that Intel is a no show. From what I have seen, Intel is keeping it very much competitive.

I was going to upgrade in 2020, but then Covid happened. I essentially lost interest in building a new PC. Most things I need are online. Now I need to upgrade.

Most GPUs I have owned were used. The last GPU I purchased new was a R9 280X. My Vega 64 was an absolute-used bargain, and that was a crypto mining hardware dump. The used market does not look good at the moment. Way too many sellers want to make their money back, and the ever-raising retail prices does not help.

My brother in Canada is laughing at how much more we pay.

I honestly cant stand this monkey....

He connects with other people. I don't. I just wanted to show the case. Influencers are by large an extension of your sales force. They are just covering every corner of their market/audience. It is for the same reason you get influencers who don't understand the product, but they reach a market who would have otherwise been excluded. Monkey see, monkey do.

It is not easy to be a tech influencer.

Maybe he just tries too hard and will be watchable in the future....

Anyhoo, this looks the same as any other case.... I hate all current options, can't stand the obsession with them basically being vanity display cases.... my kingdom for one that focuses on functionality instead. Apparently I am old fashioned in that I want 4+ 3.5" bays (that don't rattle like an old car and cooled by intake fans) and 2+ 5.25" bays that can be repurposed with bay adapters if necessary. Glass panels is just something that can randomly break for me, unnecessary (and costly) liability.

It's as if some eedjit has decided even ultra-budget buyers (with towers so tiny you sprain your fingers getting everything plugged in) need 4090 + i9 level cooling so everything needs to maximize both airflow and being able to see everything, no exceptions. If you spend that little on the hardware chances are you don't need premium airflow anyway but the maximization argument I can understand to a degree...... this does not explain why they are trying to forcibly retire 3.5 and 5.25 bays. Sure I almost never use the DVD drive or card reader but once or twice a year I still do need it for something and rebuying things that work to externalize them makes no sense... I can't see the point of having a drawer mess of adapters when I can just have them all in the chassis.

Yip, bought a 1080TI second hand when people wanted to upgrade to the 3080/90s, got it for a good price (after selling my 1060). That card is just a legend, a mistake NVIDIA will probably never make again.

I dunno, Intel seems to be going schizophrenic and investing in experiments that simply don't pan out.

You can download more FPS now with tools like Lossless Scaling on steam....what a time to be alive.

Yes, if I could download a car, I would.

Instead they make the opposite mistake.... pricing their products beyond the means of consumers.

First time hearing about this, will have a look!

It depends, there are still many business class chassis/case available at the distros. This is the case I use as a media PC, an old Corsair Carbide 100R Silent Edition.

The hardware doesn't generate much heat, so the case is usable. In that case, I have a Vantec Veris:

It is a standard media controller which is rebranded. Antec sold the same one here too, and IIRC Thermaltake did too. It has a nice remote, and I even still have an old, but very capable TV tuner installed in it. I use it to broadcast in-house. An old solution which still works.

The best part is, it is all compatible with Linux, no Windows needed.

These case designs aren't abandoned. It is only that it sells better elsewhere. It is pointless to stock inventory which doesn't move, even when it is an attached consignment.

Just see what Silverstone showcased at Computex:

For anyone building a gaming PC I would recommend a budget "air case" to start with. It will simply last longer.

I guess I was right about the motherboard pricing. New 600 series AM 5 boards are announced at Computex, many of which are BTF compatible. I can only think that the 800 AM 5 boards will come at a premium. Why not just move over to the 800 series? Circulation will be interesting. Far too many SKUs...

I have a CC 300R, it's as if they were almost at perfection and then (as GN recently noted offhandedly regarding irrationally bad drive bays in a recent air model) kinda just forgot how to design cases. Maybe they fired someone important? I simply cannot find anything anywhere that is not a functionality downgrade from this. This case will probably be with me forever considering alternatives.... just wish I could find spare drive caddys etc somewhere.

Neva had a media controller..... looks cramped.

Sure but why would older designs not move? People can't buy something if it's not available.

Intriguing but smells hellishly expensive.... not a fan of vertical optical drives either.... just feels reckless.

Question is... will USB4 be worth the premium? I can't actually think of anything that will require it but it would be good for future-proofing. PCIe 5 adoption also seems sluggish.
