New The PC Build Thread

so my firend's Motherbaord is on the way out, randomly reads only 1 of the 2 Sticks of RAM.

so he is looking to upgrade on a hectic budget.

been out of the details of PC building for a long time,
I know he should stick to AMD, and at that he should go for AM 4 rather than AM5. he currently has an AM4 with a 1700 chip I think.

so what should we look for in terms of second hand Mobo and CPU?
How did you prove that the motherboard is faulty? It could also be one of the ram sticks?

Regarding GPU drivers:

NVIDIA Maxwell, Pascal & Volta Support Looks Like It Will Soon Move To A Legacy Driver

Now that NVIDIA is rolling out the "Blackwell" GPU driver support, it looks like the NVIDIA Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta generations will soon be moving to a legacy driver branch.

Four years ago with the NVIDIA 470 series was the legacy branch for GeForce GTX 600 / 700 Kepler series and now as we embark on the NVIDIA 570 driver series, it looks like it could end up being the legacy branch for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta generations of GPUs. NVIDIA Maxwell was introduced 11 years ago with the GeForce GTX 750 series and followed by the GTX 900 series. Pascal came out in 2016 with the GeForce GTX 1000 series. Volta came out in 2017 for the Tesla V100 / DGX-1 and Titan V and other datacenter/workstation hardware.

Maxwell and Pascal had a long ride.

A Phoronix reader pointed out that the legacy branch for the Maxwell / Pascal / Volta GPUs is likely imminent and the CUDA release notes also reiterate that the Maxwell / Pascal / Volta GPU support is to be "frozen in an upcoming release." This pans out with Blackwell rolling out and Maxwell being a decade old.

It is not yet relegated to legacy status, but the hints are there. As with all things legacy, it is mostly critical security updates.

I am not sure where I stand on the 5090. In pure raster its a disappointing generation gain. On DLLS,frame gen and ai its a big gain.
People will soon need to change their way of thinking. It's like saying "I don't want a Riva 128 because my [insert 2D card] can render more 2D characters per second in SiSoft Sandra." AI upscaling and RTRT are here to stay, and adoption of both as the norm has already begun.

Some games, such as Indiana Jones and the new Doom, require RTRT. Others, such as Marvel Rivals, have graininess/pixelation on reflective surfaces and in shadows without DLSS/FSR/XeSS enabled.

It's not just a case of using upscaling for better performance, but for higher image fidelity as well. I can only assume it's something like old Sega/NES games looking terrible on LCD vs CRT, because the sprites were designed with a CRT's smoothing effect in mind.

There is no new hardware available that doesn't support both AI upscaling and RTRT, so developers are going to make use of it. The next generations of consoles will most certainly make far greater use of hardware available, and then it's game over for native rasterized rendering.

Current 9th gen consoles already do, but include the Series S which is a bit lackluster, and devs have to accommodate the lowest common denominator. Once the power of, eg, the PS5 Pro is the lowest common denominator, it's goodbye to rendering the way we know it.

Being unconvinced by something which ultimately becomes the norm is quite common. People were unconvinced by tessellation, hardware T&L, programmable shaders, the computer itself (IBM reckoning there was a market for maybe 5 computers in the world) - hell, even cars or air travel at one point. We like what we're used to, and we're used to what we like.

So I guess we’ll only see the 9950X3D when demand for the 9800X3D reaches manageable levels?

Also how has there been no stock of the RM850x for weeks now?

I’m forced to game on a bit of a potato in the meantime

Corsair went from two distis to one late last. It’ll take a few months to year for supply to somewhat normalize, but the range will never be as wide again.

Just get this ?

Even has ARGB

That’s sad news :( thanks for the info.

I’m building in a Lancool 207 and the Super Flower models with comparable fans and performance to the RMx series don’t fit (ATX re-imagined and all that). Or maybe I need to read more PSU reviews.

msi MAG A850GL maybe?

Or

Order RM850x from Amazon US? Good idea or bad idea?

In the long run, things are going to work out better.

Disti 1 would bring in something of EVERYTHING. This was extremely annoying with RAM, as Corsair goes overboard on the SKUs. For example, on Vengeance Black:

2x16GB DDR5-xxxx CL30-a-a-b
2x16GB DDR5-xxxx CL30-c-c-d
2x16GB DDR5-xxxx CL36-e-e-f
2x16GB DDR5-xxxx CL36-g-g-h
2x16GB DDR5-xxxx CL40-i-i-j

Repeat the above for Vengeance RGB. Now repeat in for white heatspreaders. We're at 20 SKUs of 2x16GB at a single speed. We haven't considered Dominator, kits other than 2x16GB, or speeds other than xxxx MT/s. Corsair had more SKUs available from Disti 1 than all other vendors from ADATA to Transcend from all distributors COMBINED.

Because they carried so many SKUs, Disti 1 would only bring in 1-2 of each unless they were extremely popular - eg 2x8GB DDR5-5200 CL40 with black, non-RGB heatspreaders. This meant that for a popular performance SKU, stock would arrive and be sold out in a day, followed by a wait of a few weeks for the next 1-2 kits of that SKU to arrive.

Disti 2 would carry very few SKUs because Disti 1 had it all, but they'd carry 20-500 of those they carried. This meant there was a very consistent supply of very select SKUs, generally on the lower end as they're the most popular. Performance kits were left to Disti 1.

Disti 2 was given exclusivity on three conditions - they increase their range by a reasonable amount, they increase the frequency of shipments, and they take over all warranties from Disti 1. Sticking to DDR5 as the example, I expect them to ultimately double or triple their range, which will still leave it as around a quarter of what WAS available, but without the situation of "Corsair brings in 300 SKUs of DDR5 but 250 are almost always out of stock."

Disti 2 has already started carrying kits as fast as DDR5-7200, and given another few quarters I expect a wide albeit consolidated range of everything from AIOs to cases to PSUs to SSDs to RAM to peripherals.

Hell, late last year, Disti 1 had over THIRTY different Corsair AIOs to choose from, ranging from SKUs that went EOL 5+ years ago to the latest iCUE LINK models.

Bought myself t705 1tb drive, supplier had it on special.

This thing moves!

5080 seems as was expected. Very Poor raster uplift between 40 series. Good raster uplift between 30 series and big ai/dlss and mfg uplifts.

I still have to see the local pricing but so far looking like a good upgrade for me from 3080 10gb to the 5080.

edit - saw progenix also has 5080 cards available
any news on when a 5090 can be seen in SA?

Sold out quick there wasn't much stock but You can preorder the ASUS ROG Astral LC GeForce RTX 5090 from Computer Mania
Estimated arrival time: Expected arrival between 5 - 10 February 2025

After 15 years, and being without a dedicated gaming PC for 7, I think it's time to take the plunge again:

Wootware Build

Budget is R35k max, with a preference to Intel/Nvidia and Razer. However, am willing to consider other options.

Would like at least 2 years before upgrading/replacing parts or entire system.

So I understand your Intel/nVidia preferences. However, there is no reason anybody should be buying an Intel CPU in 2025 if it's for a gaming PC.

And definitely not that weird thing you linked, that's a definite no.

I've taken you the AMD route as well as an AMD GPU - the 7600 XT.

Foe the GPU, definitely get whatever you feel you need - if you have a specific requirement for the nVidia GPU then grab that. If not, the 7600 XT is faster, especially at 1440p.
