New The PC Build Thread

You're hampering yourself with that RAM. Aim for 6000 if you can, price difference should be negligible if anything.

A620 isn't what I'd choose for that CPU, B650 would be a better option but you're in for more cash.

Good Point on the ram, Motherboard is quite a bit extra but at least the gpu wont be sitting on top of the m.2

Thoughts on this build? I have a good PSU already and a M.2 drive.

A620 is fine if you're not going to tinker with anything (doesn't have PBO and curve optimiser \ shaper). That board in particular will manage an 8 core CPU no problem (not always true of boards using the A620 chipset).

Get DDR5-6000 - it's virtually the same price and while the performance difference isn't significant, it's kind of the baseline.

The 7800 XT should be cheaper imo - nothing you can do about that but it's like 20% faster than a 6800 (still available somehow) but 24% more money. Annoying.

Liquad cooler is waste, rather go for air cooler id cooling dual tower.

Another thing to consider is the new nVidia GPUs will be available in a week.

Maybe hold off on the GPU purchase until new cards release and we see if there's any shakeup in pricing.

You'd think. AM4 accounts for nearly 100% of gaming PCs this year (mostly R5 5500), and 100% of upgrade kits (mostly with a 5700X3D).
Can confirm this, though I don't bother listing intel pcs even.

I even bought upgarde kits from you when my 5500s supply was low :P

A bit OT. My Gigabyte 870E Aorus Pro, with Ryzen 7000, dislikes DDR5-6400. Which is interesting since some initial 870E board reviews showed that to be an issue, albeit at much higher clocks. I run DDR5-6000 on the board with no issue. I don't know anyone else who have this board with an Ryzen 7000 CPU running DDR5-6400 or above.

For those considering to get the board. Gigabyte has recently released v1.1. Gigabyte haven't given clarity as to what has changed, but someone on Reddit gathered that Gigabyte changed the PCIe 5 repeater/redriver. This is an interesting change. I have previously dived into redrivers in this thread when I touched on CUDIMM and CSODIMM. Could Gigabyte have noise issues with the original board? I don’t know.

Gigabyte has many a time changed their components on boards, but it is mostly due to what is being available to them and they have also made changes to layouts and cooling. Either this change is an upgrade, downgrade or a substitute.

I see someone received another response:

Hi all,
for those wondering, I raised a support ticket and this was their response:
"Dear customer,
Thank you for your email.

The only difference is that we have changed some onboard peripherals to improve power supply efficiency in rev. 1.1.

Regards,
GIGABYTE"

Hard to say what specifically changed with the re-driver, but it is more than cosmetic for sure.

I don't know, my board doesn't seem to have any voltage issues, but don't like anything above DDR5-6000. Power delivery is a vast concept though. Say the above is true, then improve is a upgrade.

My system is otherwise stable.

Memory is hectic to work with if you get into tinkering...I spent hours trying different drive strengths, procodt's, RTT values etc. when I was trying to get 4200 stable on a 5600x \ B450 Tomahawk. It wouldn't work even at CL20 \ 1.5V (not b-die, was CJR if I remember correctly).

OEMs have made it easier now to get decent base speeds over JEDEC without effort...sucks if you get stuck with a combo that doesn't work out.

Anyone able to recommend some PC speakers . My z506's gave up the ghost. Tried to replace with z906 but they were DOA so now not willing to go with another z906 pair.

From what I have seen most of top 2024/2025 recommended speakers either aren't listed at the retailers here or out of stock.

PC Speakers really aren't a thing anymore it seems, look at some Edifier bookshelves. You'll get better sound than from a "PC" speaker, it seems a lot of people just go with headphones.

I really dislike headphones. Will have a look at Edifier.

I bought these earlier in the week and very happy with them. I've noticed some extra sounds my cheapo headset doesn't produce.
My only gripe is the volume/power button sits on the back so the 1080BT might be better if that is a problem

IMHO, the 5090 is a bit disappointing. For workstations it is probably a very good buy. For those who have a 4090, be happy.

I see Nvidia is selling lifestyles now...

Again, just like with the 4090, influencer handout. Little to no stock for the plebs selling their livers.

AMD just dropped their latest chipset driver (7.01.08.129) that is a upgrade from 6.10.17.152. Strangely, the latest version is not yet available from AMD's own website, but their motherboard vendors should all have it available from their driver repositories.

I have no idea what it is new, what is improved, what bugs are solved, what bugs are unresolved, etc. What is known that if you have updated to the latest AGESA version for AM5, beta or otherwise, that it is recommended to update your chipset driver. I think this notice has been put out by both ASUS and Asrock. I don't know about MSI, but Gigabyte is usually late with AGESA updates.

I am not sure where I stand on the 5090. In pure raster its a disappointing generation gain. On DLLS,frame gen and ai its a big gain.

I will be waiting to see 5080 and 5070ti results.

Looks like to me I am sticking with my 3070ti for another year :-) hell even my sons little 2060 super is still doing ok for 1080p not briliantly but ok

so my firend's Motherbaord is on the way out, randomly reads only 1 of the 2 Sticks of RAM.

so he is looking to upgrade on a hectic budget.

been out of the details of PC building for a long time,
I know he should stick to AMD, and at that he should go for AM 4 rather than AM5. he currently has an AM4 with a 1700 chip I think.

so what should we look for in terms of second hand Mobo and CPU?
