Yaeh you would want to go AM5/6 next. I started out with a Ryzen 5 1600, then went to a 5600x and then the 5900x, but now the medical bills are draining me from every angle.

Hopefully by the time funds are available again, DDR5 prices are less insane

Reminds me of poeple I used to know.

It was always : "I will not upgrade to windows 7, 10, 11... I will not upgrade to AM4, I am waiting for the next gen"

In my case, I am a bit late to the AM5 party, so want to get AM6. No other reason.

Maybe build it for Linex and MS in mind, seeing as it should be beefy over my 1700.
 
Okay, the i7 6700 needs to retire, alongside the 1060 6GB..

It'll be a multi month upgrade, with SSD storage and RAM being the very last items to purchase..

I am targeting a budget'ish 1440p build and considering a R5 9600x CPU but unsure about GPU..
 
Hmm but ddr5 goinf be pricey atleast 9600x or even 7500f can be bought for cheap.

Amd also remaking 5800x3d which allow you stick to ddr4

9700x isn't much more than a 9600x, gpu 9070xt is a decent one.

What is your top end of the budget like? Do you need any peripherals? Are you targeting 60fps or higher refresh rates?

At 1440p depending on the games you play you could get away very cheaply with an AM4 system, but your upgrade path will be limited. Also, are you looking at buying brand new or would you consider pre-owned?

I mentioned earlier on in the thread that I am looking at selling mine but I actually changed my mind - I am keeping the AM4 system for now. Maybe 2027 I will see what is available, since for my needs the 5900x and 3080Ti is still plenty enough for me, even at UWQHD@180Hz for the games that I play.

I think a nice stepping stone would be a 7800X3D and a 9070XT, but the RAM pricing kills any hopes or dreams that I had lol.

Not too bad, but at least the X3D processors aren't as sensitive to RAM speeds as the non-X3D variants so upgrading to 32GB (bare minimum I would recommend for a 1440p system nowadays) shouldn't cost too much.

But this was the issue - I could probably get around R8500 for my 5900x/B550M/32GB DDR4-3600 combo (maybe R9k if I add the X53 Kraken AIO that I have) which would still leave me with a R3500-R4000 shortfall. Add another 16GB RAM and you are up to R7300-R7800 in total extra expenditure for not as much gains at the res/fps I am playing at anyway.

With that RAM you'll get more. Closer to 10k now but yeah you'll not get that much more fps.
I learnt that going from my 5700x3d to a 9700x.

I want to be on latest gen to ensure upgrade path is there if needed..

If only, unfortunately I don't have matched kits (2x TridentZ Neo 3600C16, 2x TridentZ 3600C18) so value is somewhat diminished.

So definitely AM5 if you are leaning towards team red.

Intel's new CPU's are also pretty good for gaming, although I personally don't really support them as they don't seem to support platforms as long as AMD does, so your upgrade path is narrower down the line.

Sadly CPU shortages is now creeping in, as both AMD and intel shifted to server CPUs. There is already instances of as much 25% in some countries and as much as 50% increase else where. Latest generation may not necessarily be an option.

So yeah those CPU increases is starting to hit here a bit more, my CPU from last year, is now 5k, there is still places which had older stock for 4k +-

That said not waiting for am6 wouldn't be the worse, DDR6 prices is most likely going to be at current DDR5 prices. Since am6 will be around for awhile anyways, personally I would wait till it matures a little bit, it is likely only around second gen am6 will prices be slightly less insane.

No harm in waiting till next year to see how much am6 platform upgrade will be and then deciding. Current CPU shortages may have settled by then. But just something to keep in mind.
