Rather go mirrorless.
If I recall correctly, the 700D is virtually identical to the 650D so you might want to consider it.

Thanks for that. I read up a bit about the mirrorless, I still think the DSLR is more versatile and cheaper. The price of the few lenses available for mirrorless seem higher than DSLR. My budget is at it's limit.

You can only do that once you learn that P is for Pro mode. Pros use it exclusively, stop trying to show off that you know the technical aspects of your camera by using M, Av and Tv, there's more to photography than that.

I'm serious. There's this guy called Ken Rockwell who really knows his ****, he's been a photographer for a very long time and says outright that P is short for Pro Mode.
@bwana, I'm not quite a pro yet so I can't get close enough but I have been practising my P mode like a champ. Until I go pro I need a decent telephoto lens and was wondering your thoughts on the original Canon 100-400 and cropping in post? I don't know it at all, but if it's anywhere near as sharp as the Mk2 it'll be a better bet that the Tamron 150-600 I'm eying.

To the op, stay away from the 70-300dc, rather look at a Sigma 10-20 or Canon 10-22 if you're wanting to do landscapes. The 18-55 kit lens will be more than adequate for medium range family snaps.

I'd go for option 1, the one kit lens. AFAIK the EF 75-300mm DC lens is really not great, no image stabilization which is not great for a lens with that zoom range. There's a reason they throw it in for very little extra money. I think that lens is a waste of money, even if in a kit it only "costs" you R1000 or so extra. Rather put that R1000 towards something better in future.
If you had the money I'd go for the kit with a 18-135mm lens, it's a great walk around lens, enough zoom for most situations. It's only when you want to do sport or wildlife that you'd consistently need a longer zoom. The 18-55 mm will probably have better image quality due to the smaller zoom range (haven't read up), and be a bit cheaper. I always find myself wanting a bit more reach when I use it though, 135mm works better for me.
There is currently a big sale on canon lenses and cameras, don't know how long it's gonna last.

I mostly shoot in TeleVision mode because like most photographers I harbour a secret desire to one day shoot video and shooting in TV should help prepare me for that.
