Newbie ADSL Installation Help Please

Hi there,

I recently moved into a flat with no Telkom landline. I have received the go ahead from the body corporate of the building to install a phone line for ADSL purposes. I want fixed line ADSL specifically due to it always being on and reliability and cost effectiveness etc. I'm not interested in Mobile/3G/HSDPA internet, please don't tell me to consider that as an alternative.

Now I need to know the following:

1. What's the first step/ Where do I start?
2. Can the phone line be ordered online from Telkom's site? I tried searching around on their maze of of a website but had no luck.
3. What are the total costs (monthly and once off) involved to installing a phone line, line rental and is line rental and adsl line rental two different costs if you activated your line for 384k ADSL?

I do apologize if there are any threads already giving this info, I don't really have that much time to search as I'm at work. I thought I'd just quickly list my questions and hope that somewhere out there someone could help me.

Telkom wont do anything unless there is a conduit for them to pull through their cable and there is a draw wire for them. If you have this, just call telkom and place an order for a phone line. They will ask if there is a point installed already - tell them no. THey will send out the cabling team to pull the cable through.

If you dont have a conduit and a draw wire, you will need to get an electrician to install one first - it will be a big pain in the ass!

Sounds like fun! I just emailed the landlord to ask about the conduit. So hopefully there's a light on the other end of the tunnel. Yeah to get an electrician to do all this will just build up unnecessary costs. I'd be forced to go mobile then. ugh.

I have a friend whos apartment had a conduit but there was no draw wire. So he had to get an electrician out to install the drawwire - then telkom agreed to install his line. I am quite sure u will have a conduit for the line - the developer would be idiotic not to have installed one (unless ure unlucky enough to live in a Baldwin estate)

You can order a line off their website (http://residential.telkom.co.za/index.html), but it's best to do it over the phone, call 10210 and register as a new client. You can also see what ADSL is available in your area by visiting here http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/

For a 384Kbps line, you will pay R143 per month line rental. Installation is usually R600+, but Telkom are running various specials, and I think you can get free installation.

Afriman, the only option that sort of makes sense to me on their site is the Telkom Mix option. But that comes with a blackberry and telephone it seems. I only need the line, but I see no option for that. Am I looking in the right place? otherwise I'll give them a call. Thanks!

BTW - its also easier if u order a voice line first and then convert it to an ADSL line. I know this because I just had 2 voice lines installed in my new house and once it was installed i converted one to an ADSL line. U also save on some installation costs when u do it this way.
