hi guys,
i have secured a 10GB trial news server account and i would like to know if there is a free news client i can use to search it.

something similar to newsbin, which i used but after a little while was denied access as its trial was over.
newsleecher, xnews and grabit want me to buy into them and i'm not prepared to do that yet.

i'm sitting on 9 gb and i'm burning to use it!

any help would be appreciated!

I've tried the other programs, all irratated the hell outta me, Grabit works great for me and does everything I want it to do.

i will try it again...

just downloaded alt binz....no joy..

it says i'm connected and authenticated but i'm mot sure what i'm doing wrong. when i search, nothing happens.

i must confess i'm very new to this so pardon my ignorance

Try downloading nzb files to load into alt.binz. The search function is crap, i never use it.
nzbrus nzbmatrix
or local: nzbsa.co.za or newshost

I was a huge fan on altbinz - its a nice lightweight client.

And then I discovered SABnzbd - its more of a automated program - you can set it up to monitor rss feeds and it auto grabs the nzb and start downloading. Got web interface where you can upload/check the status of your downloads.

Used grabit once. Didnt like it. Now using Alt.Binz.

I've tried out quite a bit of news clients but will probably always be using alt binz. Alt binz just has a much more neatened approach as pausing and queuing downloads is tons easier than all the rest. However, the auto-unrar feature is not the greatest and have found that it is not the most effective which is why I now use an external program to do all my un-raring and deleting. Also, the RSS feature in Alt binz is also great and adds more automation to your downloading .Also tried newsleacher and while the repair and extract feature was very good, the rest wasn't .That said, I haven't really tried SABnzbd, but with a name like that , do you blame me? :p

Could you please elaborate on this a bit more? I'm using SABnzbd at the moment, but I want something that can download more than one nzb at a time

Maybe my SABnzbd+ isn't setup correctly, but I can only download one nzb/movie/series at a time. Everything is in the queue, but it's like there's a hidden setting: Simultaneous Downloads = 1

If I understand you correctly, do you mean that you want your downloads to run concurrently? If so, I would advise against this as if you are downloading two things simultaneously, your line speed will just divide by two and it follows suit with the more things you download and is therefore useless. To add, I really can't stand how SABNZBD is used within the browser, doesn't make much sense to me.

Huh??

Thats its benefit. Put it on a server/ htpc on your network and axxess it from anywhere on your LAN, or with the correct port forwarding from anywhere on the internet. One click nzb downloading and queing with nzbdstatus firefox plugin. iPhone app or phone browser to controll sabnzbd. As mentioned rss feeds etc. Once correctly setup its like TIVO for the internet.
