Is the local bandwidth sold by Webafrica IS? I mean, I see on news host that there's a WA news server or something related. Is it worth buying that amount of bandwidth? Is IS or WA good as SAIX???

WA has their own server which will only run on their accounts, so not on the WA provided IS accounts.

How well does everyone (anyone who uses it) find Astraweb from here? Do they censor (block) anything?

Do you mean only on WA accounts? Or from South Africa in General? I use Astraweb through OpenWeb/IS and it runs great! Nothing censored or blocked.

I dont think IS is going to get anything that way since their server never works.

It's not IS fault that the server doesn't work properly... it's the leechers who have found a way to make up to 32 simultaneous connections to the server. They use IPCop and Virtual Machines to log in multiple times and basically just rape the server. Nobody else can get a connection then. This is pretty much common knowledge now. The SAIX server suffers the same problem... that is why they are so sloooow.

Thanks, re. Astraweb I just meant from SA in general.

Ja, I use Merlin's Portal and Newshost for my NZB's and I am on the Astraweb unlimited plan $11.00 a month. It runs twenty connections simultaneously and at 420 kbps on my 4 meg line. Excellent retention... although I find a few pieces missing every now and then... but that is the nature of Usenet.

The pars take care of that though?

I'll probably just get a block account for now.

Haven't heard of Merlin's Portal before will check it out.

Anyone else experiencing virtually no connectivity to the Axxess news server using their pre-paid Local Only accounts? With their normal Shaped accounts I have no problem, but for some reason when I switch to the Loacal Only account, it just sits there, every now and then a short 5KB/s busrts, then nothing again. Switch back to normal Shaped accounts, and it runs almost full speed.

Just me, or everyone?

thei Axxess news server was for the pre-paid SAIX, when it was still SAIX.

yes indeed, but it worked fine up to a couple of weeks ago, I have the SAIX, Axxess, and IS servers set-up, they all connect, but are extremely slow / non-existant with the Local only. Same server set-up with normal Shaped account goes well. It looks to me like the pre-paid Local only accounts (or just mine) is being severely shaped for news server access, or something.

PS: Never mind, I just did the account swap, and now only the SAIX news server is working on the Shaped account. Something is changing, and I'm not liking it, time to move on :)

Mostly... I have had the odd thing that I have had to get the fills of easynews. The cool thing is that Getright resumes the incomplete files downloaded from Astra web :D

Sure, makes more sense, Alt.Binz will resume files too. (I like it way better than Grabit.)

How to open and play PAR, RAR, 101 and other files from Usenet Newsgroups

http://www.newsgroupservers.net/open-run-par-rar-001-files

Many files you find in the Usenet newsgroups can be played directly after you have downloaded them - like MP3 music files and JPG picture files. But larger files, like video, must be decoded and require extra drivers to run. We won't go into the hairy details of how to use each program - we figure you're smart enough to figure out most of this stuff, and nearly all the programs have tutorials on their web sites.

Ok? I would have thought most of us know these things. :p

FYI split video files (.001, .002 etc.) can be played with VLC so long as they are all in the same directory, without joining them (VLC sort of auto joins them), it's better to join but it's just a little tidbit.

Getright is a news reader as well?

No, I use getright to download files from easynews via their http search function. It allows you to download usenet files via http...Useful when you need a specific file.
