Quick question for the IS users. Last time I used IS I know their news server was significantly slower than the SAIX ones, but (if memory serves me right) it moved along at a constant speed. Can anyone tell me the current state of the IS news server? What speeds do you average on a 384 line?

Thanks.

I'm seeing this as well. At the office today, the HR manager came to complain about internet speed as it was near non-existent compared to its normal slow self. I think it is IS in general that seems to be a bit messed up right now.

Last month used to average around 10-15K/sec on uncached stuff. With 5 simultaneous accounts I could get 100K/sec and it was nice and constant. If I break 10K/sec @ night this past week it was a miracle. During the day it seems to be just short of totally dead.

You can aim for the popular as that gets cached quite quickly when we all put the effort in. Cached will come down full speed.

Yesterday, something cool happened. I queued two items for download

The first item downloaded at full speed during that day from SAIX, It was a newly aired episode, so it was cached.

the other item was not cached, so it went back to the normal throttled rates.

This around 2pm yesterday.

Quick question. I just had a friend back in the states set up a box for me at his house with logmein installed so I can control the computer from here and use his 20mbps connection all I want. I'll just ship externals as I need them to friends when they come here. But for quick access to larger files, I am wondering if it is possible for me to download files on that computer in the states that I need, upload them to usenet myself, and then use my local here to download them again. I know how to upload to usenet, but would it then show up on my SAIX so I could download them locally? THis would be great as I could get anything I wanted on local this way without having to wait for a friend to bring a large hard drive over. Thanks for any help.

If you upload somthing to usenet over there, you would be able to download it from any usenet provider including the IS and SAIX news servers.

Hi everyone,

I'll be popping in occasionally to help maintain this thread and provide some assistance where I can. Please PM me if you're willing to help people via PM and would like me to add you to the list of people to PM in the OP. Also let me know if there's anything that should be editted in the OP, seeing that Newshost is no longer an open registration site.

TIA

You want a free account? You could always go over to MyISP and sign up for one of their free 250MB accounts...

wait, is that site for real? Can I register for that service, and assuming I never go over the 250 mb limit will never have money charged off my card?

Someone else confirm MYISP's services please - will it let me use the 250 for international webpages? Can I sign up for MYISP even though I have an adsl account with telkom?

I have an account, get 250mb a month free, they dont even have my banking details. It is international and you can use it even if you have a telkom account.

there is a setting that allows you to pause grabit once you only have X amount of free HD space, check what its set on. Cant tell you off hand where it is, but its there:)

is it possible to post newsgroups to usenet with a standard saix telcom account? I thought you needed a username & password to do so.
