Just be careful, I would expect that the usage will be allotted to your Blended counters. It would be wise to give TelkomInternet a call. Also, I would explain to them that you left the account running in Local-Only. You might be lucky and it counts towards Local Only.

However, as you correctly point it, it will default to Blended on disconnect. There are a few safeguards you can put in place though - perhaps using static routes, Cfosspeed, Firewall etc

Nah. Last month I didn't reconnect my TI account at the start of the month. I used up all of my 30gb local before I had used a single byte of blended. But because I was using traffic splitting, only local traffic was being used. Unless you disconnect and reconnect, you can't access international.

Talking about Astraweb, is anyone else getting really choppy speeds on Astraweb and IS uncapped Express? My speed graph looks like the Drakensberg.

Same. I had put it down to pulling old articles, but I guess not. Going up and down form 150KB/s to 400KB/s. More like hills than mountains.

Suck, accidentally unplugged my computer and connection reset, now have to wait a few weeks before downloading again. Worked flawlessly for 4 days though.

Tonight it was constant and solid as a rock. Must have reached the Ampitheatre?

I have a question for those using the SAIX news server: What retention do you guys experience?

I've never really tried grabbing something that's been on USENET for more than 200 days but with GigaNews upgrading to 365 day retention (and SAIX supposedly mirroring them*) I tried to grab a file that was 236 days old. I got error "430 file not found".

Has anyone else managed to grab files as old or older than 236 days on SAIX?!

Included with your ADSL Local Only service: NEW!
1.) News Servers - SAIX news servers now mirror the very popular GigaNews servers. You have free access to this if you are an Axxess DSL customer.
Simply use news.axxess.co.za (Port 119) with any of your favorite News Group reading programs.

The retention is not from now backwards for 236 days. In other words, if you load something today onto the news servers, it will be retained for say 236 days (or whatever Giganews is set at). The retention is set on upload. so if something was uploaded when it was still at 180d - it will expire even though Giganews specifies 365 days. So as you can see, this problem will go away over time. In the interim, the confusion is that the NZB sites track their NZBs independently and operate according to a different system.

WRT 200 day SAIX retention, that's utter garbage. SAIX proxies Giganews and caches. The proxy retention = Giganews retention. The cache retention = 12 hours to a few days depending on several factors.

This file is 236 days old according to newzleech which measures age since being posted to USENET not to any NZB sites... Maybe it's just the group I'm trying from it's alt.binaries.e-book.technical ?!

What's the oldest you can remember grabbing gripen? (Files that is ;))

Not sure, maybe just over 200. I've also struggled myself so reasoned it was as I explained. I'm not 100% sure though. I tried a 230ish NZB the other day and it didn't work. Quite irritating.

But like I said, even though newzleech is recording from time of post - at that time, Giganews might not yet have reached that number. But again, I'm not sure.

I think it is only sales talk. I am busy downloading something that was posted 180 days ago, got 44.5% of the download and now it is uncached.

For where exactly?

And note - Uncached isn't the same as unavailable.

SAIX/IS might not have it cached, but if it's still available it still qualifies for the 'retention' bit.

Or do you mean an overseas server?

I made a little boo-boo. That download is only cached between 6pm and 6 am during the week and 6pm Friday to 6am Monday. After buying an AstraWeb account it is downloading at full speed, 38kbps (jippyduda), international cap and full speed after 6pm on local.
