That's my point, so why do people use a local news host stie to get their nzb's from? The ones I have seen have a tiny fraction of what is available on the larger international ones. The only advantage I could see is if people are using IS and need to know exactly which ones are recently cached.

Because and NZB is not 0KB in size.

How nice, it'll take 4 days to download 200MB of content.

Well I guess if you compare it to 40KB/s I get from the SAIX news server, double the price is more than justified

Well then there you go, problem solved, don't use IS. :)

BTW, I did over 10GB last week off IS. Yes, you'll get 200MB in 4 days if a) you're the only person connected and b) you're the only one interested in a particular file. Both of those hardly ever happen.

Yup. Getting between 40-80kb/s on a 4meg line. Newshost itself is also dead slow. Looks like Telkom are getting some payback :(

Had some problems connecting but now going at normal uncached speeds of 250kb/s

*nod* That's what I'm used to and what I'd prefer as well...

Just to make sure I understand all of this right.
I don't need to be an Newshost member to download from the newsservers.
All i need is an application like Grabbit and an NZB from a site like NZBmatrix.
Right?

May I suggest www.binsearch.info as an excellent source of NZB-goodness?

www.nzbsa.co.za Is also pretty nice ;)

I've downloaded 183MBs in the last hour and a half... *mumbles* SAIX is out to get their own back :erm:

Word is retention on IS server is maybe 72 hours and it's a revolving queue so the more people download arb stuff the lower the retention.

Very slow for uncached data. You get 5 connections. They can do maybe 3-4KB on uncached stuff. Late at night I see some 12KB/sec on uncached. Full speed on cached items though (400K/sec on 4MBit line).

The idea is for people to start caching different parts of the download so when they're done with that then the other stuff is cached already. Works very well if people work as a team rather than letting everyone else do the effort for them.

Hey, it's not a paid service so you have to live with it.

As for the news server stuff, yes, they have the same content if the newsgroup is common to them. Some might get it later than others, others will have it sooner. Does not hold for newsgroups specific to that server though. Retention of articles also depends on the news hosting company.

For IS, I do believe they pull down articles from giganews, but only when requested (i.e. uncached stuff).

Thanks for the explanation. I have been wondering about that. For now I am on SAIX with Telcom and other than only being useful betweenn 8pm to 8am. it works flawlessly. I only wish I figured that out the first year I moved here.

Why do only some files download during the day?

Anyone know why some stuff will download during the day on weekdays. I have messed around and just downloaded the hangover and a windows 7 release is currently downloading, but none of the others I have tried will start working until 6pm. I thought maybe it was because it was just the most popular downloads, but tried some others that are frequently downloaded and they won't download during day, only in evening. Any thoughts on this?

From which server? IS or SAIX? I think it's all heavily shaped on IS during the day. At night it goes much better. Better either way when cached.

They'd be loads faster if they were the popular downloads because then they'd be cached. Caching isn't for long though, so if you got the nzb several days ago then it might not be cached anymore.

Anyway, I think you just experiencing the shaping during the day from IS (if on IS).

Sorry, I am on SAIX, every day at 6pm it opens up to full speed until 8am and all day on weekends. That is normal. During weekdays from 8am to 6pm normally only get a 1 or 2kbps. But today a file kept download at full speed during the day & just happened to check. First time I have had something go full speed then. I have tried a bunch of cached stuff, but only these 2 were downloading.

I saw some talk on newshost about SAIX servers have issues.

can anyone share how newshost differs from nzbsa.co.za? I only have access to nzbsa and am wondering what the advantage is with newshost other than more files. Does it more clearly lay out which ones are cached at the time?
