How nice, it'll take 4 days to download 200MB of content.+-4KB/s
Well I guess if you compare it to 40KB/s I get from the SAIX news server, double the price is more than justified

That's my point, so why do people use a local news host stie to get their nzb's from? The ones I have seen have a tiny fraction of what is available on the larger international ones. The only advantage I could see is if people are using IS and need to know exactly which ones are recently cached.

news.saix.net is really slow tonight... Anyone else have the same issue? :/
Had some problems connecting but now going at normal uncached speeds of 250kb/s
Yup. Getting between 40-80kb/s on a 4meg line. Newshost itself is also dead slow. Looks like Telkom are getting some payback![]()
Just to make sure I understand all of this right.
I don't need to be an Newshost member to download from the newsservers.
All i need is an application like Grabbit and an NZB from a site like NZBmatrix.
Right?

Word is retention on IS server is maybe 72 hours and it's a revolving queue so the more people download arb stuff the lower the retention.
Very slow for uncached data. You get 5 connections. They can do maybe 3-4KB on uncached stuff. Late at night I see some 12KB/sec on uncached. Full speed on cached items though (400K/sec on 4MBit line).
The idea is for people to start caching different parts of the download so when they're done with that then the other stuff is cached already. Works very well if people work as a team rather than letting everyone else do the effort for them.
Hey, it's not a paid service so you have to live with it.
As for the news server stuff, yes, they have the same content if the newsgroup is common to them. Some might get it later than others, others will have it sooner. Does not hold for newsgroups specific to that server though. Retention of articles also depends on the news hosting company.
For IS, I do believe they pull down articles from giganews, but only when requested (i.e. uncached stuff).
I saw some talk on newshost about SAIX servers have issues.
