Any idea which NZB indexing site is best. Free or paid. I have been using both nzbmatrix and NZBsrus for most of my stuff but sometimes I need to download content that needs a VIP account. I just want to know which NZB site is worth the money spent.

I've paid for nzbmatrix and I feel it's worth it. You can also try nzbs.org, they normally have similar/same content as nzbmatrix

Have checked them out, not bad.

Is anyone else getting stupidly slow speeds on IS? I normally use saix, but bought 30gb local from Openweb specifically for news server stuff, and I'm getting 1-2kb at most, it's ridiculous.

Luckily I used the 2gb international on my PS3, so no money lost. But that's besides the point, I bought it for local access and I'm not getting any!! :(

Prolly next year.

Just after I posted this, I discovered BinSearch.info , I did a search and was pleasantly surprised.
Downloaded the NZB file and everything goes through my local bandwidth and through the Axxess news server... another pleasant surprise.

Am I just lucky that all the files I am searching for is cached on their news server or does the news server do some kind of real-time caching as the content is requested?

All this is perfectly normal - and news.axxess.co.za is the same server as news.saix.net by the way ;)

Did newshost just disappear for anyone else?

I had to log out and log in again to get things working. Seems to be fine now

but looks like IS server has been down since last night :(

Is there really any need to use a local news server like nzbsa.co.za? I use merlins portal, and it is so rare that I ever click on a file that doesn't work with my telkom local only.

It doesn't make a difference where you get the nzb from. The local nzb sites are usefull for people who don't have the international bandwith to access international nzb sites.

Eh? Those are not news servers, they are hosts for NZB files. An NZB just contains the ID tags of articles making up the file. Those IDs are the same on all news servers. Merlins portal is not a news server, it is a NZB file store.

You don't need to use a local news server for you file downloads. It's just that local only traffic is loads cheaper than international.

Now you got me completely confused
So what you're saying is that all news servers have exactly the same content?

Also, how is IS's news server? Is it at all usable? I have read many times on this forum that it is constantly overloaded...

Maybe not exactly but close to, some will be more complete and have better retention. The IS server is very slow for uncached content.

That's my point, so why do people use a local news host stie to get their nzb's from? The ones I have seen have a tiny fraction of what is available on the larger international ones. The only advantage I could see is if people are using IS and need to know exactly which ones are recently cached.

Word is retention on IS server is maybe 72 hours and it's a revolving queue so the more people download arb stuff the lower the retention.

Very slow for uncached data. You get 5 connections. They can do maybe 3-4KB on uncached stuff. Late at night I see some 12KB/sec on uncached. Full speed on cached items though (400K/sec on 4MBit line).

The idea is for people to start caching different parts of the download so when they're done with that then the other stuff is cached already. Works very well if people work as a team rather than letting everyone else do the effort for them.

Hey, it's not a paid service so you have to live with it.

As for the news server stuff, yes, they have the same content if the newsgroup is common to them. Some might get it later than others, others will have it sooner. Does not hold for newsgroups specific to that server though. Retention of articles also depends on the news hosting company.

For IS, I do believe they pull down articles from giganews, but only when requested (i.e. uncached stuff).
