How come so many of the packages that I download are all missing the first RAR file?

I need some help. I downloaded something and the rar files are corrupted:(. Now I need to get some par files. I have QuickPar2 installed. My question is: how do I know how many par files I must get?

I use Grabit and turned off auto-extract after an unfortunate incident.

Same here

I am having to download things twice or even 3 times to get it to work, almost always corrupted

I started my download on the WA server, switched over to IS, back to WA. Eventually it finished on SAIX (what can I say, I get around;):p). Could this have anything to do with the corruption? I would think not considering the NNTP and how all the servers mirror one another but just wanted to double check.

Another file just finished and could not be extracted either. Also multiple servers.

If you have QuickPar already then what you need to grab for each download is the small .par2 file and once you have finished the download you need to open this file in QuickPar. QuickPar will then do it's thing and should tell you exactly how many blocks you need.

If you get an NZB that does not have a small .par2 file then you can grab the (larger) file that ends with "00+01.PAR2" or sometimes "00+1.PAR2 and open this in QuickPar. This file can do the same job as the small .par2 file and also then has 1 block of recovery data.

When I say small I'm talking between 15- and 40 KB per 700 MB of download.

From my personal experience, if I have to rank the three servers the worst is IS in terms of number of corrupt files. Second is WA and last is SAIX, I cannot actually remember ever getting corrupt files on SAIX whereas on IS I often need at least 1 PAR file. WA is not nearly as bad, for a download that required close on 2000 blocks only 1 was corrupt/missing.

So I would imagine that it was IS that let the team down there ;)

From my expirences

I always use SAIX to download, I very seldon get corrupt files, but normally the par files sort the problem out.

I get good speeds from them, even uncached stuff

Quick one. What time in the evenings does the SAIX news server start flying with uncached content?

Why not select all the ones that errored and retry all of them? Ie not one by one. And move the current selection to the top so they others do get retried.

I use Grabit. After importing an NZB, I remove all the PAR2 files from the queue then I set it to auto retry errors and I leave it to download. After a while all the files should come through. Keep the NZB in case you need PAR2 files later.
