Nice article on Android vs iOS / Open vs Closed

You don't use multitasking? That is probably one of the two reasons I use android more. Downloading stuff in the background is really big for most so that isn't bells and whistles. The others most (not me though) won't care about much, so I will agree with you on that.

It's not as if iOS doesn't support downloading in the background. Widgets are nice but I haven't found them particularly useful. I just wish android was more responsive, it would make it much more enjoyable to use.

Widgets, open app stores, multitasking for example -- makes no diff in MY user experience. Others might differ.

I get what you saying, look the iPhone rocks its a dam solid experience but its not for me, well not anymore. Originally owned 4 iPhone's before I even saw Android and I must admit there are things that made it next to impossible to return fully to iOS world:

Location aware actions : Tasker/LLama
Swipe typing : SlideIT/Touchpal/Swype I do not think I could return to normal typing
File management : From USB storage to full smb(Samba) support.

If you not use to things like above you will not miss them but trust me once you start to use them its like someone tore off a limb when they are not there.

Okay, then I must have done something wrong. I could not get my podcast/app updates/books/YouTube to download/buffer when I wanted to do something else. I just like my calendar widget and my weather widget to be honest.

I find widgets very useful, it's all about having information available at a glance. This is why I always used lockinfo on my iphones. Also, I really can't do without quick settings in the notification area. Having a file system is great, too.

Up to iOS 6 most of these were possible with a jailbreak, sadly it looks like that's over now.

I still prefer Apple hardware, by a large margin, however iOS simply doesn't cut it anymore.

What is so cool about having info available at a glance? Its not as if you're going to call your stockbroker on the bus/train?

Or weather? Check the weather in the morning and plan accordingly, its not as if you can do anything about not packing the right clothes "in the moment".

Check your calendar in the morning, get reminders when relevant.

Most people cant multitask, for the kind of things we use tablets for you only drain the battery quicker, once tablet apps don't run full screen we might get real value from running two or more apps truly concurrently.

In software development you usually ask 2 questions when you get a "new feature" request from a client. 1) why? 2) what amount of business value do we get from implementing this.

Most of the time the clients want something without really knowing why, sometimes it because the competition can do it, lost of the time they add no real value, they just want to put it on spec sheet.

- Multitasking: Why, because Android can, will it improve the user experience even if humans cant multitask (on a tablet)? Will it impact battery life? Yes. Why do it then?

- Similarly widgets clutter the user experience whilst offering no real valuable info. Maybe Tony Ive can come up with widgets without cluttering the interface.

I guess most people like the choice you get from Android, Apple decides for the user. IMO they make the right decision for >90% of the users our there.

My 2c.

Who's Tony Ive?

Meant Jony, what benefit do you get from that screenshot? Can you drive and read at the same time? :-) weird combination.

I figured something like cricinfo and myBB....:-)

Depends if your stock takes a dive, I am sure you would phone him but then again I am sure you have set alerts on some stock app so I give you this one, not that most Android users even use a stock widgets anyway. Oh wait if you have alerts in a stock app it needs to be running so here is one for multitasking.

I dont mind the morning much but I loooove the 5 day forecast, its great for when you planing something esp social lives. A quick glance while talking will let me know if its cool to invite someone for a braai on Wednesday...

My Calandar widget is one of the few I use very often as it also allow for quick entry without opening a full calendar application.

No one is so blind as those that do not want to see.

I do not want to be funny, but your comments are so dumb that I can not decide if you are serious or trolling? If you are serious, then I feel sorry for you esp seeing that they are very short sighted.

Nope its based on real world experience, I suggest you read up on agile software development and especially the questions a good product owner will typically ask from a client (and no its not you Mr Fandroid, typically some internal client in marketing).

Do you really think Apple left these features out because they cant technically implement them? They intentionally leave them out since they did a proper analysis, but since Android fans keep on sh#%^ing themselves they may need to add them in future just to win you back....

Anyway, thats my last word on this, thanks for the insult, I did mention IMO.

I can play the music on my iPhone through my PC, my car, my tv. I don't really care that I cant put it on an android device. I bought an iPhone because I had an iPod. I don't really care for all this apple vs android vs whatever rubbish.

I read ebooks on my iPad from the apple book store as well as the amazon kindle.

I bought an iPad4 on impulse, because of the nice hardware, although I already had nice Android 10 and 7.7 inch tablets.

It was a mistake, I am just not using the iPad4, mainly because of the iOS limitations.

Not sure what I'm going to do with this device.

I fell in this boat a few times.
All iOS devices eventually sold and I just stay away from them now. Lesson learned the hard way - unfortunately.

What's odd is Jola was asked why he's buying an iPad even before he got one. I don't know how he still managed to make an impulse buy.

I wanted to buy (and play) iTunes movies, but only realised afterwards that I don't need the iPad4 for that, I have an old iPod Touch that does that perfectly adequately.

Note : I don't watch the movies on the device, obviously the iPad 4 would be better for that. I watch it on the TV, the iPod Touch has a good 720p output.

Haha... that urge to try gadgets is just too strong a pull sometimes :D

That ^

I also have a N7 32GB 3G that I have no use for, although it is a great device !

But I often use these extras as presents, the family just love them :D

Was just going to say...

My daughter use my iPad 90% of the time, I only use it once in a while to play a game that is not on Android like say Infinity Blade 1 & 2.

I thought I'd give the Nexus 7 to some truly deserving family member but I really have no idea how to get in contact with my ex-wife.
