No Android market with Vodacom HTM Magic!!!

Just upgraded the radio with success. Was gonna do the ROM aswell but I decided to backup the original ROM first.. It may be usefull if others want to roll back to the original MTN rom (for warranty). So am busy downloading the android SDK (162 Megs for the Mac version) which is required for nandroid.

Will post an update once I am done. Might put detailed instructions on my blog.
 
Excellent news! I would love a backup of the original MTN ROM as well - as I mentioned my success caught me a bit by surprise :)

I actually also want to play around a bit - you can potentially extract the various included apk's from the actual update/ROM zip files - they are all located in the /apps folder. In theory it may be possible for somebody just to extract/install the "Market.apk" from a ROM and then have that functionality. (Or any other app for that matter.) Obviously current MTN users would probably still be better suited upgrading to 1.5 since it just kicks butt compared to 1.1. I'm not sure that a 1.5 Market would work on 1.1, but you could always extract the relevant apk's from a compatible version. Unless there are other dependencies in the OS itself.

Detailed instructions would be good - mine only helps those that have actually fiddled around on their own for hours already and know the ins-and-outs of the various booting modes. If I read my instructions a week ago, it wouldn't have helped me at all ;)

Thanks for this. Android market is so cool! I can't believe MTN denies their users this pleasure.

PS: I had to load the JFv ROM twice. Something went wrong the 1st time.
So if your phone gets stuck there is also the 3 finger salute.
Dial+menu+hangup to reboot.

Another user has turned their expensive toy into something that is actually usable :)

Let's see what we are denied:

1. Android Market - without this you cannot install new apps without scrounging the web for hours are still not be able to find what you are looking for

2. Cupcake 1.5 as opposed to the old 1.1 firmware (Even better, a lot of the new apps require 1.5)

3. On-screen keyboard ala Magic

4. Ability to capture videos from your phone (Also includes speed-up of the normal camera functions)

5. Auto-rotate of the screen (Not available for the homepage which is a shame)

6. Multi-touch in the browser & speed/rendering improvements

7. Overall speed improvements & better battery lifetime

8. Spare Parts settings

9. etc.

As an aside, I'm starting to wonder if there are subtle differences between the JF 1.51 UK/EU & US builds other than the origin and language support. For instance I could not find Wikitude in my Market (JF UK), although I could see it when I did a search on http://www.cyrket.com/. (I got hold of this app through other sources, but it made me wonder if the Google Android Market points to the same source across all "official hacked T-Mobile" ROMs...)
 
Ok some feedback.
First off, I tried a different recovery image. JF also makes a recovery image and it includes nandroid which I used to backup the original MTN ROM. It makes the backup on the SD card.

After the radio upgrade I attempted to do the JF-UK upgrade and I thought I bricked the phone as it hung on the initial "android" screen. I then did an erase/wipe and immediately after that it booted the new ROM fine. Didn't play with it much and the Maps application crashed once.

I was dissappointed with the orientation not working on the home screen. Then I remembered this page, http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/android/android_build_information.asp and wanted to try different Android versions.

I just moved to CyanogenMod v3.3.8 and orientation works on the home screen. This is based on 1.52 but has some additions and is ADP not EU or US based (I think). Also has some other cool features, including a pdf reader. I was looking for an office document reader on the Android market but could not get one.. even though there is quickoffice and multireader on the net somewhere.. but these are pay versions (but will be worth it for me).

Hopefully this build is stable because it is labeled "experimental".

I think that Android market looks at either the phone build (or maybe region tpe .. US, EU, ADP) to determine what applications are allowed or not. This is because the US and EU markets have different laws/requirements etc. regarding some apps.

I think we are lucky here as the MTN SPL does not seem to have many checks in it. Some users are not able to load the images we are loading without updating their SPL... this is where a phone can really be bricked. I am still using the original MTN SPL.

One thing that is really great is the syncing with gmail. I can sync my calendar and contacts with my Macbook with no hassle at all... gonna have fun with this phone!!
 
After you upgraded your MMS/GRPS settings will be missing.
Set them up again using the following settings on your HTC Dream:
From Home screen: Menu-Settings-Wireless controls-Mobile Networks-Access Point Names
Add 2 new ones:
Name: MTN-GPRS
APN: Internet
APN type: default

Name: MTN-MMS
APN: myMTN
Username: mtnmms
Password: mtnmms
MMSC: http://mms.mtn.co.za/mms/wapenc
MMS proxy: 196.11.240.241
MMS port: 8080
APN type: mms

That should do it

Yes, I had the same initial "hang" - was not too happy at that point, but it recovered :)

The non-orientation of the homescreen also gets me - it is the one small issue that I'm not 100% happy with in my version.
 
For those who don't want to void the guarantee installing a new ROM and are willing to wait a few months for Vodacom to make the Market available, it is possible to get some of the cooler apps.

Wikitude: I contacted the developers and they sent me the install file.

Sky map: I asked on the google code android market forum (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market?hl=en) and the developer at Google sent me the file

Yeah... I realized that my backup will include all my contacts and personal data so am reluctant to post it online... if you do need to take your phone in for a warranty though... send me a pm and maybe we can make a plan. I could potentially send only the system image... I am not sure how/where all the data is stored... and I can not mount the IMG files on my macbook... maybe they are in some unrecognized format.

If anyone has a "clean" phone.. it is trivial to boot a recovery image and do a backup.
 
hi guys, i am relatively new to this and need some help, i see in the forum guys making comments about backing up the image for restore etc and was wndering how to do this, also i have the magic with rom version 1.5 but the crappy vodacom one without any kind of market app, where can i get the international rom version 1.5 for the magic and how would i install it? so as to get the android market app and some others.
 
all the posts on this topic have been about the MTN Dream not the Vodacom Magic so it may not work... but you can try. I plan to make a howto soon but time is tight this week... JacoGR summed up the ROM upgrade in one of his posts on page 2... Regarding the recovery, you will need to download a recovery image with nandroid support (the JF1.43 one supports it) and use fastboot to boot it and do the backup... if those directions are not clear enough you might have to wait for the howto.

I would really be interested in the HOWTO seeing as I'm getting my Magic in the next few days
 
Just spoke to Leaf and they already have the Android Market and are currently testing it. We should get it pretty soon. They'll post the update on leaf.co.za

If they are posting an update on leaf.co.za then i guess the networks wont support OTA
