No EFF Coalition with ANC or DA

Are they used? Nope.

Part of the reason: it's fkn deadly. Taxis must be reined in first. Establish law and order on the roads, and suddenly cycling becomes more attractive.

A lot of Joburg initiatives were put in by Parks Tau because he wanted to look good in eco conferences and stuff. However, the city is NOT ready for them. There are far more important things to get right first.
Why do water leaks go for days unattended?
Why does it take 2 months to get a pothole repaired? By the time they get round to it it costs multiples of what it would cost if it had been attended to immediately.
Why do suburbs go for 3 days without electricity? Why do informal settlements not have proper electrification?

Cycle lanes, wifi and that stupid eco-mobility month were just Parks giving the residents a pearl necklace.

LOL. Hilarious. A non-coalition coalition. Agreeing to vote with the DA despite their differences is the dictionary definition of "coalition". Unless you don't want to pee off your radical followers, in which case you can just say that it's not a coalition (even though it really is) and hope that they don't know the difference.

It's not a coalition. It's just an agreement to install a DA exec mayor, without any agreement to vote either way on council matters going forward.
 
Far too much power for a party that only won 10% of the vote.

It isn't going to be easy going forward but I hope it is better than what the ANC delivered and we reach a point where the DA does not need the EFF's approval to take action.

the cycle lanes always baffled me. Eg. in Homestead Park (a few blocks away from Langlaagte) there is a 1km stretch of road with cycle lanes. And thats it, its off a main road, on in a suburb and never used. In fact they very next block the road narrows and is crumbling on the edges. So even if it was used, cyclists will use this 1km and then what? U turn and repeat? I would assume they'd have lanes to form a loop or a well thought out start and end point. Not just random roads and lanes?

The simplest dictionary definition of coalition is literally this - "a temporary alliance for combined action". The fact that it may only be restricted to the mayoral vote doesn't change the fact that, if only in that action, it's a coalition. It's obviously in the interest of both parties to make it look like something else, but no amount of word play will change the fact.

In a political setting, it is not a coalition. It's a minority government.
 
The Cambridge Dictionary defines coalition as, "the joining together of different political parties or groups for a particular purpose, usually for a limited time, or a government that is formed in this way".

So, these will not be coalition councils. There may be a technical "coalition" for the period of the mayoral vote, but it ends there.

Malema said it himself: "We are not co-governing. We are voting for the opposition"

A coalition government implies governing together. That means all parties involved get positions in the executive structure. The EFF decided to forgo this perk - a massive own goal in my opinion. This is not a coalition government.

Disagree. I think this helps keep the EFF ideologically pure and puts less pressure on some EFF figurehead having to govern well (as it would be their first executive).

Time will tell, but I predict the EFF will join the coalitions in the new DA Metros in the not too distant future, or risk losing all power once the post election political grandstanding subsides and the DA starts negotiating with individual ANC councilors to get thing done. There are many reasonable ANC councilors, who represent wards and need to deliver to maintain grassroots support. Many ways for the DA to take all the credit in this situation.
