No Man's Sky

What features were you expecting the game would have?

I stand by what I was expecting the game to be

The features promised in the promos, maybe? This link is a good start:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/4y4i3a/wheres_the_nms_we_were_sold_on_front_page/

Regardless, even without most of those promises not being kept the game feels barren and empty, devoid of meaningful content. There is only so much flying around cut and paste planets I can do before I start yearning for something more. The game could have really done with proper exploration, faction wars, meaningful trading, etc- much of which was promised before release. Aside from different color palettes each star system is pretty much the same as the next one. You might look at slightly different plants and animals, but the gameplay is going to be identical regardless.

They could have tied your survival to a resource that had to be refined at your ship. They could have included totally uninhabitable planets that have no life whatsoever. They could have included planets where absolutely everything wants to eat you, and it is capable of doing it. They could have done so much more. They could have made planets that actually didn't have any previous lifeforms on it. No outposts, nothing. I don't care what the middle of the galaxy payoff ends up being, there is no narrative that would resolve that little caveat in any way that would make me forgive it.

No Man's Sky creator walks back "no paid DLC" statement

You may have heard recently that all future updates to No Man's Sky will be absolutely free. “We do want to add a ton of features, like we've just discussed: Freighters, bases, these type of things. But we want to do it for free,” Hello Games boss Sean Murray told Red Bull last week. “You've paid for the game, so you should get this stuff without paying even more money. So no, there will be no paid DLC, just patches."

Yesterday, however, Murray walked back those remarks very slightly in an interview with the Daily Star. He told the site that he was “perhaps naive” when he ruled paid DLC out completely, adding that it could happen if “maybe in the future there’s some reason why we just couldn’t possibly afford to do a certain feature without charging for it.”

Lol, Murray had been riding the hype train, generating record sales by selling lies to the market. Again, another backtrack, yet, the media still supports Hello Games, to quote the Daily Star,

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/tech/gam...aid-Xbox-One-release-PC-PS4-Review-Best-Deals

NO MAN'S SKY reviews on PS4 and PC have been overwhelmingly positive, and while updates will remain free for now, Sean Murray hasn't ruled out paid DLC
.

Uhm no, the sales was positive, the game was ill-received on PC. The article also hype the game here and there...

They could have tied your survival to a resource that had to be refined at your ship.

Picture only being able to re-charge your exosuit while in your ship... the player instantly loses the freedom to pick a direction and wonder off too far because they are now permanently tied to the duration of their life support until they get back to their ship

They could have included totally uninhabitable planets that have no life whatsoever.

Argument invalid

I'm currently residing on a planet covered by permafrost... Sentinels - Threatening, Flora - minimum, Fauna - devoid.

They could have included planets where absolutely everything wants to eat you, and it is capable of doing it.

I'm sorry that you haven't come across a planet where all the fauna and the sentinels were hostile 24/7

They could have made planets that actually didn't have any previous lifeforms on it. No outposts, nothing.

Now we're getting into discussion territory...

By 'previous lifeforms' I assume you are talking about those boring dull interact-able Alien races that look IDENTICAL?

Let's scrap those because you don't want them - you've just removed part of the blueprint acquisition system (progression), removed part of the language system (more progression) and removed every monolith tied to this planet (progresson tied to Atlas)

No outposts?

Let's scrap those as well - you've removed all structures on the planet that further gameplay, GTN Terminals (selling/buying), Multi-tool blueprint consoles, Exosuit upgrades, the ability to find ship upgrades and... the ability to hard save the game

You're going to love the middle of the galaxy. Think the series finale of How I Met Your Mother. It's on the same level of trolling as that.

It almost makes me think this entire game was a troll, that's how bad it is.

You don't think plants are lifeforms? Science wants to have a word with you. Also, this world of yours, does it have outposts with NPCs?

Maybe this is part of the problem. Have you considered that? Gameplay is intrinsically tied to these boring, repetitive features. The same bunch of outposts, monoliths and knowledge stones littered on literally every planet on the universe. How is it engaging if your gameplay is dependent on monotonous features?

That was a slightly bait on my part by providing the description of my planet without having personally come across plantlife on the surface - BUT instead of complaining "why doesn't NMS have this idea of a planet I have in my head", I've actually gone and found something closely similar to that idea that actually exists in game...

If this was the perfect idea of a "home" planet I thought up years ago when the game was first announced, I'd consider myself satisfied.

How is it engaging if your gameplay is dependent on monotonous features?

it’s an infinite procedural sci-fi-space-survival-sandbox

I'm really enjoying my first week in, and must admit I'd like some of the promised features (but hey, they can still come), but I stumbled upon this guys take on it all, and it blew me away. Really worth a read for both fans and haters

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/aug/19/no-mans-sky-elite?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

I read the article and I am by no means blown away. The guy hammers on about Elite, a space trading simulation which was made in 1984, the nostalgia. To quote,

I have of course been reminded of all this playing No Man’s Sky, which is in effect Elite for the 21st century (yes, I know there is an actual Elite for the 21st century – Elite: Dangerous – but it is much more of a serious simulation, and is constructed in a very different way).

so... Elite was not a serious simulation? The only similarity here is that it was an 8-bit game which had procedurally generated worlds. As a 1980’s title, the game was quite advanced as a serious space trading simulation. Elite: Dangerous / Horizons captured this the best, and is mechanically more Elite than No Man's Sky ever will be. I do not even know why Keith Stuart made that comparison.

Stuart continued,

Some people have reacted badly to this. Used to being told they’re the centre of the galaxy, gamers are furious about the lack of direction in the game, the lack of point, the lack of meaning, the lack of recognition. It has occurred to me while watching the controversy unfold that many of the angry comments about the game are expressing existential angst. There’s no point and no direction. You hear this a lot about life in general when you spend time in online forums. I think the internet and the vast cynical, largely anonymised community it has engendered, has allowed a kind of nihilism to form and propagate. The people dismissing the No Man’s Sky creators as liars and thieves because some of the potential features they talked about haven’t yet materialised in the game, are having trouble coming to terms with the vagaries of the creative act – and of life itself.

Uhm,

When things don’t work like that they feel cheated.

no schit, Sherlock. What about gaming activists like John Bain and Jim Sterling? Oh wait,

BI4EeXFh.jpg

and Stuart continued,

I mean, I don’t know what’s changed in the 30 years since Elite. Is it simply about technology? Is it that we require more detail and direction from our games now? That makes sense I suppose.

where was he the past 30 years?

Ugh!

The other 10% was terrifying and desperate space battles that would often see me jettisoning in an escape pod and starting my empire from scratch once again. The game had missions, but they were randomly allocated and dangerous. I rarely bothered with them.

Wing Commander, Star Wars: X-Wing, Privateer, etc. must had been real schitty games then. I would love to hear his opinion on Freelancer... Watch the Super Bunnyhop review I had posted, that guy had it spot on.

Players had an actual issue with this,

I like floating just above the surface of a planet, watching the details bubble into life below me;

Sean Murray LIED, he already backtracked on the gratis DLCs. The point is that the marketing hype was built on a lie. Watch_Dogs was sunk due to the game being mispresented. Murray, however, he has been given a gratis pass to ride his BS hype train.

At the end though, Stuart talked more about Elite than No Man's Sky… Just shows.

The above quote is what keeps the game so engaging

An infinite procedural sci-fi-space-survival-sandbox with incredibly limited assets. Okay. Very engaging seeing the exact same monuments and outposts on every single planet you visit. Minecraft had more variety because they actually randomly generated their structures. No idea why NMS didn't just opt for the same.

@fulcrum, this is incredibly interesting to me:

Used to being told they’re the centre of the galaxy, gamers are furious about the lack of direction in the game, the lack of point, the lack of meaning, the lack of recognition. It has occurred to me while watching the controversy unfold that many of the angry comments about the game are expressing existential angst.

I wonder how Stuart explains the success of Minecraft, Elite Dangerous, DayZ, Rust and the list goes on and on. People don't hate not being the center of a game and they certainly don't mind games with no point.

It's amazing the apologetics NMS fans will come up with to try and dismiss criticism. They're even contending the MP issue, even after you show them the clip where Sean Murray says the only way to see your player model is to have another player look at it (and ironically, there isn't even a player model).

Sean Murray LIED. The point is that the marketing hype was built on a lie.

That's really the crux of the matter. And too many people won't acknowledge that because they think it's their job to defend him/the game.

I didn't think my pc was gonna be able to play the game considering my radeon 7770 isn't supported by the game but I downloaded the torrented version to see if it would work.

Surprisingly it runs everything on high with very little stuttering and haven't had one crash.

I started the game and before I new it it was 4 o'clock in the morning. I understand this game isn't for everyone but for me its the first time in a long a game has had me this enthralled.

I do feel like there are only about 10 things you can actually do and then repeat (which feels like an alpha game) so its not worth R600 if it came in at R200-300 I would buy it now. They also missed out on so much that could have made this one of the best games ever.

When they add a lot more to the game and bring the price down I will buy it but untill then my version will work just fine.

Agree, but Sean Murry did tweet that at the moment they are working on player service, ironing out issues before adding more options and game play, like those promised in the beginning

Haha did I strike a nerve? :D

Ya, look, the lying/lack of promised features is huge. Even more so that there hasn't been any communication on the matter. Pretty disgraceful imho. What I was aiming for (should have clarified... :/) was about the group who don't see the point of the game (the repetitive grind). Stuart comparing Elite to NMS in that way. As in, the game has provided you with the tools, create your own adventure. And yes, it lacks a LOT to even begin to compare, but hey - hopefully things expand a bit.

Anyway, I'm not here to praise the game. On my 6th day I was in serious thought about getting a refund, but in the end decided to stick it out. Will see if the gamble pays off or not in the coming months. If not, oh well.
