...or MacBook for that matter. Had my bag lifted from right under my nose last night. 40D, 24-105L, 35mm f/2 are gone, Macbook is gone, passport is gone (happened to have it with me) and a few other items. I had my backup drive with me - haven't spent much time at home for the last week or two, so I took it to work with me because I'll have time to do a backup. Fortunately I replaced the drive just a few weeks ago, so I have the old one with everything on it, and my photos are backed up to my server, so I've lost only the last few days worth.

Sorry to hear KJ :(

Where was this?

Eish - That sucks happened to me a few years back - got to the point that i started keeping all my tech all over the place so it didn't all go at once.

Where you based?

Hectic - another victim of the Tube?

Hope everything was well insured. Glad you have backups even if only partial.

Nope, someone snatched it from under my table at my local pub.

EDIT: didn't have insurance. I was busy shopping for insurance, as it happened, but haven't committed to anything yet, because most offerings have small-print exclusions with respect to travel, and that's the one thing I want fully covered. So that's too bad.

Yeah, I've been pretty paranoid about backups. Even if I didn't have the old drive, I have a second external drive at home (the old 3.5" FW one) that has all the important stuff on.

On the bright side, at least now I have justification for a new MBP and camera :D

Lol, may I ask how much the cam and the lens and everything else was covered for?

Ooh... bummer... makes you wonder why people try to get you drinking at the bar :p
The "stolen today, insurance was tomorrow" thing tends to happen a lot... and nothing sucks more than that...

It wasn't. Damage is about £3k and a sh1tload of hassle. I have to change ALL my passwords everywhere. Cancel all my cards thanks to form information saved in the browser. Apply for a new passport & leave to remain (damn, I hope I don't have to fly back to S.A. to do that).

The thing I'm most worried about is that the person who took this, if he/she is savvy enough, have enough information about me in their hands to pull of identity fraud without any problems. My only saving grace is that I haven't lived here long enough to be eligible for any serous sort of credit.

Gawd damn that's awful. At least on the bright side you didn't have to go to a bar and drink yourself into oblivion due to the theft cos you were already there :(

Surely you encrypt the important stuff though? Email, personal documents, etc. I'm not even paranoid and I protect that sort of stuff.

Damn, that's bad news KJ. Are you known in your pub? Maybe pass the word around in the pub?

My SiL, who lives in Germany, got her passport renewed through the embassy in Germany, so I'm sure you can do the same in the UK. Took 6 weeks though (same as here anyway).

It was on my to-do list, along with insurance :(

Yip, it's my local - I've been going there for two years. Although there is only a handful of people that I recognise as regulars - I've spoken to them. Spoken to the barmen/ladies. They have CCTV, so I'm going back this afternoon to have a look.

Yip, I just have to apply again at SA House. It should be quicker than Randburg Home Affairs too...

I'm sorry to hear that, KJ. I'm worried about the ID fraud, because you said you had personal info on the laptop.
