I find that slider to make very little difference to chroma noise (which is what bothers me most).

On a per-image basis, but that takes a bit of fiddling. I'm no expert, but the best results I've gotten out of software applied to my RAW files does not match the JPEG's I've seen coming out of the camera when I shoot with RAW+JPEG and NR enabled. That's just the way it is, the 40D's NR is impressive.

Sorry, tickbox. Don't have my mac with me - memory was a bit hazy on that one. Yes, I've played around with the moire slider too, not so much for noise but to play around with correcting CA. Didn't make too much of a difference either. I need to play around some more with that though.
 
If the 40D has good NR, why not just use that? NR looked great on the 40D when I tried it.
 
OK, this just blows my mind. This is a 100% crop from a foreground dark area of a picture I took at ISO 1600. Extreme example, I know, but the tend is the same in pictures with more light.

With Aperture's Auto Noise Compensation:

So maybe the "lack of NR" in RAW that I see has got nothing to do with the camera?

You know how I'm always saying that with NR enabled, my JPEGs come out just about noise free, while the RAW files (if I'm shooting JPEG+RAW) have loads of noise?

Well, now that I discovered this, I'm thinking maybe that's not the case at all. It looks like that tickbox, in all but a handful of cases, adds more chroma noise, rather than remove it.

I think I need to have a play with Lightroom and compare.

OK, how about this. Larger 100% crop from the same image, but in an area where there is darker and lighter surface, and exposure pushed two stops to make it easier to see.

With Aperture's Automatic Noise Compensation:

Actually it was easy to see with the first one when I inverted the colours but its odd - you seem to be having the exact opposite experience. I wonder if their 40D import filter is causing the problems.

BTW - Paris in the summer - nice :)

Maybe. On some pictures, particularly ones that don't have a lot of dark areas, or ones with weird/unusual light sources (like outside at night with various neon signs and street lamps and lights from cafes all lighting up the scene) the results are very different.

As soon as I can figure how and where I'll submit a bug report.
