Dont forget you're also getting "Apertures Noise Compensation" as found under "RAW fine tuning" so whats coming out of the camera might well still be fairly noisy.
I find that slider to make very little difference to chroma noise (which is what bothers me most).
I'd agree that I think one would get better results using a PC, cos one would have much more control.
On a per-image basis, but that takes a bit of fiddling. I'm no expert, but the best results I've gotten out of software applied to my RAW files does not match the JPEG's I've seen coming out of the camera when I shoot with RAW+JPEG and NR enabled. That's just the way it is, the 40D's NR is impressive.
