NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

Has anyone tried Smart Guard? I installed it but when i try to run it it says that it will only work in Indian regions....I tried downloading it from various sites but i get the same error all the time. Has anyone managed to get it working? If so please post a link to the site you downloaded it from. Or is there a similar program which i could use to protect messages and pictures etc. Thanks

It only works with Indian sims (ie. from india) as it was released specifically for their region free of charge.

Is that like Wavesecure Lite in the !download application?

I'm not sure. I haven't tried wave secure. From what i've read wave secure protects your data in the event that your phone gets lost or stolen. It allows you to remotely lock your phone although i don't know how good it is. I'm looking for an app that will password protect my messages and pictures etc.

I'm not so clued up on symbian devices and software as this is my 1st symbian phone. I've seen a lot of apps with the words 'Signed" or 'Unsigned" in them. What exactly does that mean?

You are probably talking about Symbian Signed or whatever it's called. all it means is that signed apps have passed symbian's tests to determine whether they're harmful to the system or not. Also, signed apps gain access to most of the phone while unsigned apps don't get access to the os's sensitive parts. which means you don't really have to worry about unsigned apps causing damage, although use your own discretion.

btw my second symbian phone (had UIQ few years back), but I'm still a noob when it comes to this.

Ok so let me get this straight. Correct me if i'm wrong. The way i understand it is that symbian signed apps are like Microsoft products approved by Microsoft's genuine advantage thing. And unsigned apps have limited capabilities because they are not approved because they may be pirated and could cause potential damage to the phone...

My understanding is that symbian signed apps have access to certain protected functions available under the symbian operating system. AFAIK there are also different kinds of signing available. Once approved a developer can get his application signed in such a way to allow operation on all phones. It is also possible to get a certificate to sign a application specifically for a certain phone. This is to enable developers to test the applications before submitting for a general signing.

Um, I think theres another element missing from this explanation.
Signing an app actually means that the app is registered to IMEI of the phone it is being installed on. This then gives you a certificate that specifically allows for the app to work on your phone.
This is for copy protection reasons, so for instance if you buy an app online, it is signed to your IMEI so that you cant freely distribute it.

Hey guys,

I received a file via bluetooth and it is sitting in my inbox. How do I get it from there to my mem card? There is no save option and I can move it, but only to other folders in my messages...

Hi Guys..
I've been through a few Nokia 5800 threads on here.. and it seems MTN users have no probs upgrading the firmware.. whilst Vodacom users can't update firmware so easily?

I'm going to take out a new contract at the end of the month... and I'm leaning towards Vodacom.. so can any VODACOM Nokia 5800 owners confirm they have upgraded the firmware with no probs?

Cheers :P

Vodacom have a tendancy to brand their phones with their Vodafone BS. If thats the case you WONT be able to flash without jumping through hoops.('hacking' the vodafone firmware and debranding and reflasing and hopefully not forking up your phone)

Get MTN, original nokia firmware, unlocked, save youself the BS

While branding of firmware on phones is rather annoying I would stay away from eMpTy eeN as a network.

Just use Nemesis Software Suite and change the product code of your 5800 to one of the european ones.
