Nokia 6680

Just thought of this. All these problems we are having with the 6680, which problem phones are 'Normal' and which ones are VLive?

Mine is normal

Does anyone know how to force a 6680 to use 3G? I know that I have signal, but the phone only switches to 3G occassionally. Its a bit annoying as I would really like to use it as a modem.

Okay so I took a trip to Nokia today to have my software upgraded, new version is V 4.04.07

Things are already much better, phone takes longer to start up but once its on everything is much smoother than before.

MMSes come through immediately now and the phone sticks on 3G better than before.

Also it seems that I no longer get the magic slowdown when typing linked smses.

Download NetMonitor from www.symbian-freak.com. Go to menu 81.1 (scroll up rather than down) and select Options, Execute and enter 2 to use only 3G. Phone will reboot then. (Note after installing the .sis file it is listed as "Test" in your menu.)

Just keep in mind that as you drive around you are more likely to lose signal as you go through areas that have no or poor 3G coverage.

A vanilla 6680 can be ugraded to VLive without a problem. It's the same hardware, so the VLive version is just a different firmware. I've upgrade my own 'vanilla' 6680 to VLive without any hassles.

Also, the phones don't need to go away. Took my 6680 to Canal Walk and they upgraded it on the spot.

Unproudlysa, won't you PM me the mail sent out?

Nokia in Greenpoint told me they can not load a vanilla version on a Vlive one as it will cause "damage" to the phone. I had to go to a Vodacare shop to get version 4 firmware. They did the upgrade, but it took almost 2 hours. Why?

How long did yours take v3g?

I disagree, did some tests at my friends place - his version 3 firmware phone vs. my version 4 firmware phone. GSM and 3G signal relatively weak, around -90 dBm. Both phones stuck to GSM. I was hoping it would stay on 3G.
:(

Mine took about an hour but I suspect that after the hour when I asked for the phone, they did it in 5 minutes.

I suspect the same happened to you, 1H50 waiting in the service queue, 10 minutes to upgrade....

V4 is supposed to help with the 2g/3g switching. Maybe you signal level was too low?

Have you tried to force it with netmon?

Forcing with netmon always works yes, but I want to avoid the schlep of having to do that.

I get the same at home. The minute the 3G signal gets to around -90 dBm, it switches to GSM, so with cell breating and everything, I can not stay on 3G unless I use netmonitor, or put the phone in the window where I know the 3G signal is very good. So although there is still plenty of signal to work with, the phone goes to GSM.

I guess this is a problem for the guys programming the phone, cause the phone should after all not drop phone calls?
I see in the UK they are complaining that their O2 branded phones stays on 3G till the signal completely dies and then switches. As a result, they get a lot of dropped calls there.

Can't please everybody, it seems.

Is it really worth switching to a N70 if you got a Nokia 6680?

I like being able to control/monitor my internet connection with my 6680. If the netmonitor is not available/compatible with the N70, for me, no.

I just saw the specs on the N70 and there is really LITTLE difference!

I have an unbranded Nokia 6680 if I update to V4 @ VodaShop will they put the VodaFone version onto it =/

Yes, there is no 'vanilla' v4.

It will do a few things:

1) Obviously load the latest firmware
2) Set the phone up for the VLive APN (and the others)
3) Change the top right quick access button to a VLive shortcut. I think it was the camera shortcut.
4) Make the VLive theme the default.

A lot of people change the theme back to the Nokia one. This gives the original look and feel back. If you want to use the camera, sliding the cover open automatically activates the camera.

so you can put the phone back to NORMAL mode if VodaFone software is on it? Cause I am very very happy with my "vanilla" phone.

it's possible to change the shorcut buttons i changed mine back to the default which is camera from vlive. It's under tools, settings, phone, standby mode. Just check all the shorcuts are defined there.
