Nokia 6680

Kalvaer, no problem.

All phones get new firmware every now and then. So it's always good policy to check what is available and if you should upgrade. The version approved was 3.04.10.

There definitely is 3G on the phone and it's been tested and approved as a 3G device. It also is EDGE capable.

So I've got no idea where this vicious rumour started, maybe an over zealous salesperson?

go through the "I know what I want" page in the top navigation.

Hi everyone. This is my first post on here, so....
Anyways, I've been due for an upgrade since 05/05/05 and have been putting off upgrading since then. I've received numerous calls from Vodacom asking me to upgrade, but I kept insisting that I'm waiting for the 6680. It's really frustrating when you're so close to what you really want, yet still can't do anything but wait.

It's good to know that the phone is approved, and is 3G ready. I'd hate to have to wait another 4 or 5 months for another Nokia 3G. The main reason I want a Nokia is because of the Symbian OS. If the SonyEricsson P910 was 3G ready, I mite have went for that. But I've always used a Nokia, and since I bought my 3650 over 2 years ago, I've been hooked on Symbian.

Vodacom3G, thanks for all your info. You're much more helpful than the "support centre" at Vodacom whose only answer is "I don't know".

I called Autopage yesterday, got them to fax me through their Retension Prices on Vodacom contract packages for this.

The 6680 was on the list and being eligible for an upgrade, I called them back to say I want one. They said, as far as they know, all branches are only getting stock mid June. I have been put on the waiting list, so as soon as they have stock, which is hopefully by the end of next week, I will be getting mine.

Hopefully this all works out and nothing goes wrong :D .

Just something to keep in mind, and this shocked me. I compared the price differences from last months Retension Prices(7 May - 7 June) to this months (7 June - 7 July), and the prices have increased by at least R200 on a cell phone that you want, but have to pay extra for.

Queried this, and they told me its because of the exchange rate.

It all depends on the phone. Not all the prices went up. It's all about the market. The Samsung D500, the Sony Ericsson V800 and a few others increased in price at certain stores because of the demand for the phone. Other phones like the 6230, the LG's and a number of Moto's decreased because the demand for the phones isn't that great. But some stores just keep dropping the prices of phones regardless. I believe at Metro Home the Sam D500 is R49 a month now for the first 12 months.

But when it comes to the N6680, I don't see it going free on Weekender for another 6 months at least. (Although that depends on the store)

You could be right that its dependant on various things, but I just thought that I would mention it anyway. One thing I can say though, from the lists tha I got, all Nokia cell phones went up in price. For instance, last month the 6230 was FREE on Weekender, this month you have to pay R199 on a Weekender.

But it might still be store dependant, or SP dependant.

Metro Home at Vodaworld has the 6230 free on Weekender for R29 pm for the 1st 12 months. That's very cheap, if you ask me.

Dont say that, just now somebody will hear you and push the petrol price up again.. But none the less, unfortunalty it does seem right

Last month on the 10th of May the US $ to SA R was 1: 6.3

Figure today that I just got : US $ to SA R is 1:6.9

Looking at the Nokia 6230 List price at Amazon. The phone is $299.00. So that works out to be R2063.00 this month and R1883.7 last month which is R179.4 difference...

Question is though are you buying this months phone at last months price and somebody is make extra profit?

Hehehe.... and we definitely dont want that.

My opinion, and this is only my opinion, I hope not to get shot for it :D , is that everyone in the cell phone business is out to make a "quick buck", simply because its a growing market, so there is money to be made.

Just my opinion.

Strange how when the prices go up because of the exchange rate, they tend to say there even if the exchange rate drops. I have experienced this in all walks of life :)

Just in case someone is interested - I found the 6680 advertised for R4900 (down from R5500) at CaCell. For those of us who don't "do" contracts :)

Anyone purchase anything from them before? Are they any good?

I am on a Casual Chat 100 and I really like the Nokia 6680. Two problems are that Cell C dont have 3G yet and the cost is going to be crazy. I am currently ready for my upgrade and my contract expires in October 2005. So maybe I should wait for then and go Vodacom... had anyone got a Cell C 3G Launch Date?

MrG - if your contract is only expiring in October, I would wait a bit before renewing your contract. Three service providers are applying for "Virtual" Carrier licenses - Virgin, Autopage and Nashua, and pricing is bound to come down for contract customers. Virgin will be partnering with CellC. At this stage, its not clear who Autopage and Nashua will be partnering with...
Just my 2c worth.
Wrt 3G coverage - I wouldnt be surprised to see Cell C extend their 20 year roaming agreement with Vodacom to incl 3G coverage....
Cheers -

Good idea, I am currently with Autopage Cellular. Maybe I should just hold on longer. I definetly would like a 3G phone on a 3G network... When do you believe these "Virtual" licences will se approved?

Hi Everybody.

I've just called the vodashop, and 4u shops at vodaworld, and they both say there is some problem, and that the 6680 will only be available towards the end of July.

I really am sick and tired of vodacom's lack of service as far as this is concerned.
Catch a F'ing wake up vodacom.
