Nokia (and Microsoft) versus Android and Apple

Nokia (with Microsoft) is now a true competitor to Apple and Android

I had to check to see if it is April 1st....

I will never own a Nokia again. Droppig OS's like flies was the last for me. Apple would never do that. Once I can upgrade, going the Android route.

Can you explain more, what OS's are being dropped and how exactly does that affect you?
You must really hate linux with all its flavours then...

Not sure I agree with the comparison as the three produce different components
and there is a huge difference in sales.
  • Apple makes handset + OS
  • Android makes OS only
  • Nokia make only handsets
  • MS makes OS + Patent war
MS is an [-]true[/-] unfair competitor by using the FAT disk layout patents against Linux to
coerce handset makers to pay up.
AFAIK, you are not allowed to patent structures, only methods, but the flawed USPO granted it.

Both iOS and Android far outsell WP7 - so much so, that WP7 is almost a rounding error in the statistics.
Apple sold more iPhone 4S in 3 days (4m), than MS sold WP7 in 1 year.
So I don't see how MS can be considered a competitor.

MS makes more $$$ from Android than WP7.

system32, I like the way you think, you should maybe tell people the truth about intel, they don't believe me.

remember that nokia is still the biggest cell manufacturer in world in terms of devices sold, all be it that 95 % of these devices are not smartphones, i think their short term goal is to get these nokia users to upgrade to a nokia smartphone

Right and wrong. They are the biggest and yes, and the vast majority of those phones cost less than R100. They are however not planning to have those users upgrade to smart phones. We are talking phones like the C1 which is built with multiple phone books and dual sim card. The reason for this is these phones are typically shared amongst a family, the people using them are that poor. These phones typically have standby times in excess of 1000 hours. This is not even Series40, we are talking stripped down flashlight wielding Series30 devices.

What Nokia are doing is working on a Linux based replacement for Series40 phones. It will not be smartphones but most of the developers working on it comes from the MeeGo team and anything is an improvement on Series40 6th.

Amen to that, I would even go so far as to name them Mafiasoft. (Pay protection money or else I'll break your kneecaps)

If you read what Microsoft does and how it does the license deals you will understand why. The people are not allowed to discuss in any way the deal's they made or the deal is off, now that tells me something fishy going on, esp seeing that the Linux world has asked how many times for Microsoft to show what patents Linux violates. Also Microsoft not targeting any of the big boy's that Linux is connected to, the likes of IBM, Red Hat, Conical, Google....

But at least they license out, unlike Apple that refuse to license their portfolio.

What USA has to watch out for a s break in the system when OEM's start making 2 versions, US that is striped down and World that has all the features. remember not all countries have software patents in fact most dont.

Anyway, I hope Nokia well with there new overlords, that will dump em in a second the moment they dont play along, but I guess that is why Elop is there, to make sure they do Mafiasofts bidding.

This will be a win

You can't over-emphasize the strong impact of Windows in corporates, and I think the Windows/Nokia alignment will have a lot of credibility in terms of corporate comms and access. Its the new BB and more.

That new Nokia phone is damn gorgeous looking.....

I'm very interested in possibly getting me one.

Will be interested to get some feedback from our carriers if they plan on launching these phones here.

IMHO, Nokia should consider rebranding and start building their smartphones under the new brand. Every time I hear a new Nokia phone, I can't help but to think of the feature phone I owned in the early 2000s. They should try and move passed this diluted-brand.

HUGE mistake. The brand might be diluted but it's at least recognizable and recoverable. They need to do a good job of clearly branding within the Nokia identity. The Lumia 800 is a perfect example of how to create brand-identifiable hardware that still looks distinctly fresh.
