I am due for an upgrade and have to decide between a Nokia E71 and Nokia 5800XM.

What would you recommend? The 5800 is cheaper but I am not sure about the touch screen versus the E71's qwerty keyboard.

I will take a MTN Anytime 350 contract and will use the phone for browsing and email.

At the moment I lean towards the E71 - it is a pitty that the camera is not better... I am currently using a N95.

If you're going to use the phone for business, rather get the E71. The QWERTY keyboard just works better for sending e-mails. Battery life is also better.

I love my E71 - especially the keyboard and battery life. It's sound reproduction isn't bad (compared to my daughter's 5610 XM), but the camera really does suck.

E71 is absolutely fantastic. I have compared the E71, the Omnia and the 5800 XM. The E71 is hands down the best for business as you will not get frustrated trying to type on the go with the Omnia or 5800. If you move your thumb in the general direction of any key on the QWERTY keyboard, you'll get it right. The Omnia just has too amny features that the average businessman will just not use. The 5800 is a phone with the main function of music... Calling is secondary ;)

Thanks, I think the E71 fits my profile best. Hopefully MTN will have better pricing on the 1st of May.

I would say the E71 s a good phone, but a little dated now. The 5800 appears to have been rushed into production, but has wide appeal. Maybe wait and see what the next gen has to offer like the E75/E55 and competitors.

If you haven't already, go for the E71. I am very happy with mine. I write a lot, and the QWERTY keyboard is fantastic. Very good overall build quality, nice feel in the hand. Camera is lousy, but sound is good. I do a lot of internet reading, screen is quite adequate. Very nice to have the Nokia Maps and voice instructions.

E71 for sure. We use one for our technical support and its awesome. The keyboard is so easy to use and the phone just works. Also got an awesome solid feel to it. Its also the most popular phone in our company (I work for a WASP).

All E series phones seem to have sub standard cameras (my E65 is another example).

From past experience, the E's are awesome, unless you want touchscreen and movie and all that shiznay, the 5800XM is great (my girlfriend has one).
Just note, the GPS on the E71 is an A-GPS, not standalone gps afair.

Almost all phones GPS's are A-GPS, but this is actually an advantage, as it is a standard GPS with the ability to make use on online servers to speed up the aquisition of a signal.

I got my E71 yesterday. And it is an awesome phone! The build quality is exceptional and it feels great in my hands.

Does MTN/Vodacom support A-GPS?

I played with the 5800 for 2 minutes and hated it. Useless touch screen with little purpose besides the gimmick of it.

I'd go E71 too..
