Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

Here is an interesting comparison of the camera ability of the N95 8GB vs. N82 vs Kodak Z740 when it comes to using the flash:

Bwana, you may be interested in taking a look too. I am not sure the Kodak Z740 meets your standards when you refer to a stand alone digital camera but the N82 seems to have the whipping of it in this review.

As far as I know he is an SLR guy so he will snarl at any camera that can take videos. :D

I sold my Z812is last week and have ordered the Z1015is yesterday. Should be here in 10 days. I don't want to get into a whole off topic camera discussion but I have a few problems with SLRs and if you look at their price I'd say it's more for show off value. Dust on the image sensor, no movie mode, buying lenses extra, working out to carry the thing around - eish, not quite my style ;)

For most photos in life you will do damn good job with an N82. For everything else (that rarely comes a long) there is the ZxxxxIS range for Kodak or SxxxxIS range from Canon. :cool:
 
Yeah, Roux, that whole having to carry a camera strapped over your should through the centre of town also just doesn't do it for me.... a great camera tucked away in my pocket, ie N92, will do me just fine.

To the OP, who seems to have gone missing, here is another review of top smartphones which I found and thought I'd share with you. I am also making decisions at the moment, well actually pretty much set on the N82 but no harm in still reviewing, so thought I'd share my findings.

There is definitely a benefit of having a nice camera on a phone, but I wouldn't buy the phone for the camera.

Pooky in most instances, well especially Nokias I find, there is never much question about call quality etc. They all perform this function perfectly so the main use of the phone is covered. To make a decision you'd then need to move onto what you would use the phone for most after calls.

If this is not one specific thing then you'd want the phone to perform each of your desired requirements well. For me the thing I use my current phone for most after communicating is taking photos. I am always snapping pics when we are out and about to share with family and friends around the world. And of course to store the memories. So the N82 gives me great calls and it has what seems to undoubtedly be the best camera on the cell market.

I very rarely surf the net on my phone as I much prefer my larger laptop screen for this. But if the need really arose I could surf just fine on my Nokia. and it does everything else very well too... but I won't bore you by listing all the functions on my current N95! I send faxes when the need arises. Use my cell camera as a webcam if need be.

If it then also gives me flexibility to do almost anything I desire via the Symbian platform then even better!

Bottom line, in this instance, is you need to decide what differentiates the N82 from the Omnia. In this case it would be the camera.


EDIT : I am assuming Samsung have sorted the issue out but with my old D900 it was impossible to take a photo of a moving object as by the time the image was taken the object would have moved out of view. Also if you were lucky enough to get it in frame it would be blurred. No fiddling with the settings helped this...

Agreed - you should buy it if best suits your requirements.

Did someone mention the true multitasking abilities of Symbian :p which the N82 is running on. Good to see Symbian popping up in some Koreans phones as well.

I don't think you will find a lot of people here that have and been using BOTH phones and if you do find one, i will be the first to admit that their opinion
will be better then mine.

I chose the omnia because of the features, specs, and most important....reviews i read on the internet.
and i recommended the omnia because i think it's a great phone and i don't regret choosing it (personal experience).

BTW: I never choose a phone based on appearance, but if that's what you want, get an iphone.
 
I always choose a phone 70% on what it looks like. Some of they features are a bit important, but the major factor for me is what the phone looks like.

Your comment does point out that you can find what you want on the internet and get it to say what you want it to say! :)

I have found comparative reviews between the N82 and the Omnia and I always seem to see that they draw the conclusion that the N82 wins! Maybe it is the way you search the net that gives you the results you are hoping for. ha ha. That is why I have provided links to comparisons above.

The most important thing is that you are happy with what you got...

That compression chart , doesn't specify the Omnia's great camera features like the auto focus, smile/face recognition and geo tagging.

Well I say that because if you read through the comments made before that post you will see very little justification given by the forumites who say Omnia, then the person I responded to was the first one to specifically mention something and it related to the design. Hence my comment.

As regards your second demand, I already posted a link above which had a side by side comparison... yes the Omnia beats the N82 on some fronts but for me the N82 has the edge in the areas that count.

Well the N82 does have a better flash...

:D

At the end of the day, if you like the omnia - then thats awesome.

But not everyone likes it, there are many reasons why...

If the Omnia is the all conquering monolith, then why is it that some still pick the competition?

Everyone has their favourites, it's just that you have the Omnia as yours...

N82 has auto focus....

N82 has geotagging...

That smile recognition just sounds bizarre to me and more like a gimmick. Correct me if I am wrong but it does not take the photo until it recognises a smile? That is just silly. It is a digital "camera" if the person was not smiling take another snap. I don't want the camera deciding when to take the photo if it does not "see" a smile.
 
Bear in mind I do not own the N82 yet. Like the OP I am still deciding, although close to making it the N82 after all the research.



I really would just like some of the Omnia callers on here to state why they would choose it over the N82? And not just say "Omnia for me!". I don't want to find out afterwards that I made a mistake with my choice! :)

LancelotSA, I think it would be best to rather get an independent view on it...

The guys here who own the Omnia are going to be bias...

Maybe go to a cell shop and ask the guys working there?

I just find it humorous, or perhaps sad (not sure which emotion describes it best) that someone asks a question on this forum and instead of getting constructive input it ends up as a vote fest! Damn, if you have an Omnia and you think it is soooo great then tell the OP why you think so and why he should get it.

The closest I have to the N82 is the N95, which I have had for about 9 months and I could give the OP some negatives relating to the N95 I would but there aren't any! ha ha

Just a quick q...

Is the N82 screen smaller than N95's?

If so, how well would the GPS work on the N82?

The more I read on the N82, the more I like it..
