Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

It comes with real player but I have power player and core player on my N95 and they seem to play absolutely any format.

Perhaps gsmarena assumes that the reader is very familiar with the best of Symbian, something I cannot attest to due to my current piece of junk N70. IIRC, at times they just sort of say that it's the usual Symbian goodness and all that

Yeah, you are correct here.... they often seem to say it is as great as we have come to expect from Symbian and then only touch on the new features. You almost have to read an N82 review in conjunction with the N95 review! :)
 
This may or may not be a deal breaker for most but does the warranty offered with the Omnia cover a cracked, inked or broken screen? And what are the chances or cracking, inking or breaking an Omnia's screen?

I ask because at the demo of the HTC diamond recently the rep stated unequivocally that no warranty would cover a damaged screen and a replacement screen would cost in the region of 3.5k...

This has put me off the Diamond some what although I am still lusting after the Touch Pro...
 
Thanks for the compliment. Your posts aren't too shabby either ;) I'm glad this hasn't devolved into a shouting match with hurled insults back and forth like some of the iPhone threads :D

hmmm.... is it free and easily downloadable for WM 6.1? Likewise for the N82?

Will try reading an N95-8GB review then.

For the record, I'm still undecided and my MTN shop has still not called me to say they have an N82 in stock. My N70 has been reduced to a glorified alarm clock and can only receive calls cause I have zero air-time loaded on it :( Don't feel like giving Vodacom more of my money just yet.

This does concern me that certainly it would appear that touch screens are more vulnerable to total failure being caused by screen breakage!

Anyone know what it costs to repair an N82 screen though?

I've never ever insured a cell phone before, but perhaps with this next acquisition it might be time. Costs a fortune though. I'm thinking it will be around R150 per month, at a guess?

I have used the logic before that if insurance is going to cost me anything more than R50 (in fact even if it costs R50) I'd rather take my chances and if something does happen I'll just take a new contract and stick the old one out. The insurance will be a definite expense for 24 months... the cell might only break/get lost after 18 months so what you saved on insurance can go to your new contract....

In theory you should be able to play divx/xvid with the Omnia "out of the box"
(without installing additional software), however, you need to register your device
on the divx website and than run a spacial AVI to activate the device,
and even though i spent a lot of time on it, i could not get it to work.

Not sure if core player is free but everyone should know by know where to get it from.

I really enjoy using core player on my Omnia, good quality, running
smoothly and audio is loud.

Can you tell me if the Garmin on Omnia has voice navigation or not?

Any cell these days that suffer screen breakage is render useless so in effect total failure. You will also find that seeing as the two devices are very much the same price..the repair/replace of the screens will be more or less the same.

Just a comment on N95-8GB... Sorry but I have not hear any good things about it from my friends. Very slow (even after multiple firmware upgrades) & like most Nokia's - no charging via USB. Not sure if the N82 will suffer from the same problems...

With the rand being in the toilets, I think i might have to forget about the N82/iPod Touch combo becoming a reality. I don't expect to get a Touch for anything close to reasonable now :( Might be placing that order for an Omnia real soon.

Reading the gsmarena N95-8GB review now... Nokia (or perhaps all mobile phone companies) really seem to shoot themselves in the foot sometimes. They make sure that their mobile phones catering to similar segments of the market don't intrude on each others territory. As an example, the N95-8GB, has 3 cool N82 features missing from it. Do they do this deliberately so as to not hurt N82 sales? I'm talking about LED/non-xenon flash, lack of camera lens cover and lack of memory card slot. In protecting one N-series phone from another N-series phone, they forget that they need to be giving their all to defeat the threat posed from other mobile companies.

<edit>Lancelot, would there be the ability to edit documents on the N82? IIRC, the answer is no.

The mobile office is also very well presented, with preinstalled applications able to open Word and Excel files seamlessly. Unluckily editing documents is not supported by the included version of the Quickoffice. Omnia guys: When surfing on the phone, how easy is it to change from 3G to WiFi and vice versa?
 
Ryan411, I havent been able to figure out how you get the omnia to use either the 3g or wifi connections, maybe someone else can help us with this.
 
I haven't played around with mine a lot either. Been too busy at work. But I'd like to hear input as well.
 
Any Omnia owners using the stylus a lot that comes with? I guess you just keep it in ur pocket like a pen? Pity they didnt make a slot for it...

I used the stylus the 1st day and then got rid of it, got used to the touchscreen :D

My understanding is that the N82 has dual processors so it does not suffer from the same slowness and is especially adept at multi tasking, or so I have read and am lead to believe.

I just noticed this, try depleting most of the RAM for both N78 and N82. Then, when running a very RAM-hungry apps (like adobe reader with xxx pages) immediately press red button and try to dial someone. No slowdowns at all when dialing on N82 while N78 is pretty much screwed up.

Remember the N95 8Gb came after the classic N95 so with 8Gb onboard that, stupidly, made the call that a card slot would not be necessary. The xenon flash only came along with the N82 and even newer models like the N96 do not have it. I personally feel it should be on every phone going forward but it may have to do with space, cost and battery considerations(?). The lens cover being left off the 8Gb was mad... not sure of that thinking!

I have office suite and quick office loaded on my N95 so I can edit office documents.... not that I have ever used it! :) One of those things that are so much easier to do on your computer with a mouse etc.

Does the Omnia come with office editing on board? I suppose being WM it would.

I hope for an honest answer here :) but how readily accessible are third party applications and additional applications for WM on the Omnia? For Symbian they are all over and I use IPMart, NoemanGSM and GSMHacks forums extensively to get what I want. Will this be the case with WM? They do not show anything for these phones on those forums...
