Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

I've been on the N82 waiting list (only at 1 store tho) for almost a month now...

Lancelot, do u have any reviews on whats so bad about Windows Mobile at your fingertips? Is it really so awful? Sorry, feeling lazy and have to be off right now, but will Google it later on if/when i get a chance.

Hi guys. I can upgrade on Wednesday and just can't decide which of the above two phones to take. Price difference would be R80 a month more on the Omnia.

N82:
- Great Camera
- Xenon Flash
- Keypad (not a great one, but still)

Omnia:
- Huge screen
- Touch screen
- Garmin GPS for life

I'm so confused. I've never typed on a touch screen and don't know if it will make life more difficult - especially when sending sms's or so. Also screen resolution on the Omnia is not as good. What do you think?

How is the QWERTY touch keyboard on the Omnia?? That is one of the things stopping me from buying the Omnia otherwise I would have one already. Sorry N82. No MTN shop I have been to in Cape Town has an Omnia that I can test. I am used to an awesome keyboard on my E70 and the touch keyboard has me worried.

Nope I (I am a she not a he) chose the Omnia. A few reasons for that. Firstly, being a female I get very impatient and I've been waiting for stock of the N82 for longer then a week now and they don't know when they'll get stock. MTN got 5 Omnia's in and if I wanted one I had to decide quickly. After going in to view the phone, I fell in love with it. I think it is overall a very good phone. It might not have the best camera as the N82, but it has a lot of other things that makes up for it. I absolutely love it! The 8GB internal + 8GB external, the large screen, the Garmin GPS for life, plus the car accessories are all pluses! And the fact that it's quite pretty doesn't hurt (though my decision was not based on this at all!)

Go ahead and go view the Omnia, it's really a good phone.

The touchscreen is actually really easy to get used to it. I typed a few messages on it already and it's quite easy to use! And I've never had a touch screen before.

I would suggest reading the manual though. I did and I learn more about the phone every second!

I have two contracts - one personal and one for work (lucky me ) and my next upgrade is in 10 months time. So if I don't get used to this phone by then, there will be a lot more phones available in 10 months time.

I have read a few reviews on it, here is one :

Typing on the device is quite a task, but with a staggering seven different input modes including a Windows keyboard, a Samsung keyboard (with slightly bigger keys), three handwriting recognition functions and two keypad options, you're sure to find one you can get on with. You'll have to use the stylus rather than your finger though because the interface of all options doesn't cater for finger operation.

...but this is the deciding factor for me, and I have read this in every singled review I have read regarding WM :

The biggest flaw of the Omnia though is that the handset runs on Windows Mobile. Although currently there's no smartphone alternative operating system until Symbian launches a touchscreen version, you just can't get over the irritation of having to use Windows Mobile.

Samsung has done very well to hide the OS with its own skin, replacing the somewhat antiquated icons with something a little more colourful, but there are still huge defects with the speed at which anything happens.

Most apps take three or four seconds to load up which is disappointing when you compare it to say, the iPhone, or even a non-touchscreen Symbian device. The Photoslide photo album viewer and media album are possibly the most irritating applications on the phone. Loading up pictures is fine, but zooming in and exploring the image closeup is just painful. Photos take ages to 'process' and until then the images are just pixelated shots. The accelerometer is just as sluggish too.

Shads, have you experienced the sluggish behavious and slow response times ito zooming into photos etc., that review speaks of?
Also, does it look like that paint finish around the sides will last? It's probably too early too ask since you only had it for a short while now - but I remember the Samsung U700 has this chrome shine finish around the edges which came off within a month and made the phone look so shabby...hope they used better stuff on the Omnia!

No, I honestly don't. I promise you, that extra few milli seconds does not get picked up. I am picky with those things - and I do not feel frustrated at using this phone.

It looks more solid then the U700 and (touch wood) I'm hoping it lasts longer!!!

I did a few battery tests with my N82 black:

On full battery charge - 20 hours of radio at a reasonable volume.
On full battery charge - 660 photos WITH red-eye double flash AND autofocus for every picture.

Though, i would be interested to see a comparison test in this regard, these 2 phones are very different and its silly to make it a pi$$ing contest between each and every feature. So it comes down to what set of features is more important to the user. Obviously the N82 kicks ass when it comes to taking pics and video and the Omnia won't be able to keep up on this test. Just my 2 cents.

<edit>@Shads: Very interesting that u relented and got the Omnia (due to lack of stock on the N82) and that u are pleasantly surprised at how the Omnia performs I'm still undecided, though your feedback might be a factor in my decision when i eventually make one!

I agree totally with ur comments. Not for 1 second would I take on the N82. I would have loved to own it!!! All I'm saying is that the Omnia has its own set of (though totally different) good points. I am not sorry that I took the Omnia and I am discovering more and more on this brilliant phone!

And like u say, the N82 would beat the Omnia hands down as far as photo's / video goes, but then again, I have 16gb of memory! and I have a legit copy of Garmin for life! and It works a charm - have used it a few times!

Here is a review from MobileTechReview.com:

Pity that website does not have a review of the N82 so it is difficult to use it for a comparison. Yes, they rate the Omnia but I just read the N95 review (the closest they have to the N82) and they speak extremely highly of it too so one can just imagine the N82 review.

These are wonderful and valid points but the counter argument to this is always that you can get as many microSD cards as you want and have unlimited memory on either phone so it never really sways me. As long as the phone has a slot.

As for Garmin for life, we have all said it but for life is in reality two years until you get a new phone so a good marketing comment that "for life" And I am sure there will be other things going on your phone that are less than legit so it does not bother me where my software comes from. You are also preaching to people on a forum where most use torrents, news servers etc.... The N82 comes with Nokia maps in any case but I have not had anyone confirm yet whether it has the one year voice navigation like the N95 8Gb had? I'd be sure to load Garmin anyway....

Yeah, the bigger screen is appealing but the N82 screen was made smaller deliberately because of the form factor. And it has the same pixels on a smaller screen so colours are vivid. Anyway just me making decisions out loud again.

Oh yes, finally cost. We are tossing coins about these phones and the Omnia would cost more on an MTN package...
