Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

I have to admit that a two year license sounds good enough to me. After all the contracts are two years and we all know that in two years time I am going to be gagging for a new phone... lifetime seems a little like overkill!

Shads, great to hear you got your hands on a real one to play with. I checked out some dummies today and unfortunately they are shocking samples, so not much help.

How was that d-pad to use? I see on the dummy the edges around the centre button are quite narrow but I was still able to press it. Was it easy to navigate around the menus with the real thing?

What do you currently have? I will be going from the N95 classic to the N82.




EDIT : Out of interest and because sharing is caring here is an extract from a review of the N82 camera for all those who keep asking why you would not just get a digital camera instead of worrying about the "pathetic" cameras phones have :

To find out if the phone was a good enough replacement for a standalone digital camera, we compared it to a 10-megapixel Casio Exilim EX-S10 set to shoot at 7 megapixels. We took pictures with both cameras, then printed them out with a Lexmark X3550 and asked people which shot was captured with a camera phone. Most thought the N82’s printout was the digital camera’s photo, and others couldn’t tell a difference. The overall opinion: the Nokia N82 is good enough to stand in for a digicam.

N82 it is!!!

I am most certainly taking the Nokia N82! I've just been reading so many good reviews on it. And a friend of mine has been reminding me of something - most Samsung phones come out with a bang and two months later they lost all value. Nokia's hardly ever loose value. I mean, when the D900 came out, it was so expensive, and today I won't pay R500 for it!

The N82 feels very much like the N95 does. I had an N95 and it was stolen about three months ago. I bought a cheap D600 Samsung to keep me going till I could upgrade! You can't imagine what any upgrade will feel like - HEAVEN!!!

I had absolutely no problems with the N82 keys, or the D Pad. It felt comfortable. Menus are fairly standard.

My advise? Look at Samsung's track record and compare it to Nokia's. No comparison! Go for the N82!

It's my Thread, I can give the final verdict :p

I have a D900 lying in my bedside table draw collecting dust....thought it was the bees knees not even a year ago and now I realise how dated it is! :)

Ha ha I am probably with you on your verdict. Samsung seems to have the gimmicks like touch screen, smile recognition and pretty looks. Nokia goes for the longevity with best camera on the market including Xenon flash and on the fully customisable Symbian platform. The novelty of gimmicks wear out and then the real deal shines through.



And for those who say you must choose a phone for it's phone ability first and foremost, have a read here :

EDIT : I am adding things as I discover them myself as it may help others who are trying to make this same choice. I just realised that the Omnia only records video at 15fps and not 30fps like the N82.

Also we know the N82 flash is exceptional but a review of the Omnia camera in dark conditions had this to say :

In dark conditions, even with the built-in image stabilizer, movement made for blurry pictures. The LED flash didn’t do enough to brighten the room, although it was sufficient for taking photos at a dinner table.

I know I had this problem with my D900 in any conditions. If something was moving you would end up with a blurred image. I would have hoped this had been sorted but apparently not.

Ha ha but it looked pretty and shiny... and we know how important that is when choosing a phone!! ;) ha ha

Nah, it wasn't that close. Just took a peek and momentarily thought about it. But that is the exact problem with those shiny phones, you buy them more for the "ooohs" and "aaahhhs" you get from other people than the hard graft they can, or more often cannot, do.
 
Yeah got to say, I liked a lot of things about the Omnia before getting into this thread. It certainly sounds like the N82 is the real deal but I'm not happy unless I've got the top of the range for the next 2 years so I will be waiting for the N96. Before the end of this month it should be available... albeit at a premium..

Omnias been a bit exposed here so perhaps it can be crossed off the wishlist...

Yeah, the N96 does sound good but like you say when it first comes out you will be paying a stack for it so to get value it will be too long a wait for me. Also when you do a side by side on GSMArena it does not have too much more than the N82. It probably wins on looks, has 16Gb on board, and a bigger screen but then I have no idea why with a flagship they left off the Xenon flash!
 
mmmm.... what about the N96's dual arm processor? 264=528mhtz doesn't it? and then there's the tv receiver although that probably wont be all that extensive, the coverage and the costs, like when the phone comes out, could be prohibitive...

My understanding is that the N82 already has dual processor :

CPU Type: ARM 11
CPU Clock Rate: 332 MHz
3D Graphics HW Accelerator

I have watched this entire video review (iPhone 3g v HTC Touch Diamond v Samsung Omnia, Pt 1) up to Part 3. All 3 total about 45minutes in duration. I'm not that familiar with Win Mobile, but in this review, the Omnia looks really fast, and I didn't see the 3-4 second delays that knowyourmobile.com spoke about.

No doubt the N82 sounds rock steady, but at this present moment, I am still torn between what I perceive as a more attractive feature set in the Omnia vs the devil I know in Nokia (with xenon flash to boot).

Probably the main cause of doubt for me in the N82 is the small screen. If u compare it to the N95-8GB 2.8" screen, the N82 looks a bit sad with its 2.4" screen. Then I think about the Omnia with a 3.2" screen! *drool* :p
 
Is the 2 year license standard? I know I have asked this before, it's just the sales guy from MTN told me 1 year. I tried to upgrade and they only have the Omnia in stock and he tried to pursuade me to take the Omnia. Says it is a much better phone, and blah blah blah. :) He told me that the Nokia doesn't really have GPS, but a map program and it doesn't compare to the Omnia's Garmin GPS for life. He also says the screen is brilliant.

And to think someone on here suggested I go into a shop and speak to a salesperson! I can tell you now that with a few minutes on the net I know more than they do!
 
salespeople dont do half the research that some of us do - they know the features written on the side of the box the phone comes in...
I wouldn't let a cellphone salesperson convince me differently, ever (no offense to salespeople)
