Nokia N95 @ Vodacom??

I am not an expert on the Nokia Update Service, but from the observations I made while my N95 was being reflashed it would appear that the entire firmware image is first downloaded to your PC before the actual reflashing takes place. This would make sense because Nokia cannot guarantee that everyone has a 100% stable connection to their server during the reflash. Once the image is on you PC (and been verfied) it is then sent to your phone and this is the critical time. If the phone is disconnected (unplugged), the battery goes flat or your PC crashes you then may have problems. Like many smart devices that can be reflashed after manufacture, there is usually a permanent bootloader code that is never overwritten, so I am reasonably sure that if something did go wrong during the transfer of the firmware from the PC to the handset, there would be some key sequence or low level reset that you can perform to put the device back into reflash mode. I would not want to be in that situation though!

So I would say you should be okay if you lost your connection while the F/W is being sent from the Nokia server to you PC as the F/W in your handset has not yet been erased or altered.

Im sure im not alone in this, but is anybody willing to give us a link to a walk-through or maybe writing one themselves on how to go about loading the UK firmware on our N95's here?
I can more or less make out what needs to be done by reading through the whole forum. But would prefer some proper instructions so the i dont end up with an expensive paper weight.
 
Speaking about flashing and Nokia Software Update, has anybody here in South Africa who has updated their firemare seen any improvements in their handsets?? Are there any new bugs after updating to the new firmware??
Has anybody tried running game emulators such as MAME on their handsets?? Where do I download them from??
 
Much faster, especially the gallery. more features available, PTT, Internet Calls, SIP support, IM support, and and extra game.

Haven't spotted anything new, although the red key still kills the running applications instead of taking you back to standby.

Haven't tried emulators tho... but sounds like an idea.... will keep an eye out... :-D

I tried using NSS. on install it asks me what i want to install (1st was some virtual drive.)
I played around with the different installs but wasnt sure what was potting.

Love it! works great! Gallery is like a bazillion times faster and the whole os is much more stable...

just wish they'd fix that "red key kills running apps" thing.... keep hitting it while in mxit and finding myself on standby screen....

Is the icons issue in the phone logs sorted out. For some reason the only icon which shows in my N95 logs is the mobile icon. The telephone icon does not show up at all.
 
Is it possible to upgrade your phone to firmware version11 without the risk of turning it into a brick and without voiding your warranty???

Please advise as I am getting mine tomorrow!

The problem is it can void your warranty, if it does you on your own for 2 years with no way of getting it fixed should there be another problem, and with Nokio you bound to have another problem later.

Just wait for the proper South Africa Firmware Release. Don't go and change your product code to update the Firmware.

The risk is much bigger to turn your phone into a brick if you do that.
 
WOW, JK8 fastresponse! OK, so best option...keep the current firmware? Have there been any problems that you may know of concerning the GPS lisence as I hear many people talking about?

Yes, that true. It could turn into a Sony Ericsson. And you don't want that.:eek:
 
Codemastr thats a good link.I also managed to download VMAME from the net. It works fine with early 80's arcade games,but the sound has to be disabled as this dramatically slows down the games.With sound off they run fine.Im stil lookin for GBA,Sega genesis emus though cos the ones from your link are just demos.
That being said,the N95 is awesome device.Cant wait for future games for the N95 if the system rush demo is anything to go by... 3d games... grrrrrrr
