Nokia N97

If you get 1 year free navigation with Nokia Maps, what do you do after 1 year if you don't purchase?

Does the GPS or Nokia Maps stop working?

Hmmm not sure, but I think the voice guidance falls away. I dont particularly like Nokia Maps, I find the maps inaccurate in my area. I have loaded Garmin XT WITH 2009 maps and its almost all good. Small little problem in landscape mode that Garmin are apparently working on, but in portrait its perfect.:D

yah im sure after 1 year voice guidance will fall away ... just a guess but turn by turn navigation might also fall away meaning u can only track urself but not navigate ... Leftfoot is rite... Garmin XT kicks Nokia butt ... im still using my n95-1 but have 5 navigation programs fully loaded and quite honestly i dont go near Nokia maps .... btw if u find a way to hack ur handset, u can have full Nokia maps navigation ... Garmin XT works without a hack so choice upto u ...

Neato. I take it Garmin XT is not free ?

Sorry, I'm new to GPS software. N97 will be my first GPS phone.

Okay, a quick google on "Garmin XT" reveals how naive I am :)

At $99 is it worth it ?

I got my hands on it today and its awesome.. I already had N96 and E71 but using a phone like N97 is a total different and new experience.
And it got all the features needed to keep a netizen like me on track in my daily life..

Garmin XT is "free" IF u look in the right places such as some symbian forums ... lol ... im curious though cos im not sure if it will function with the touchscreen but if it doesnt, im sure they will release a patch soon cos GArmin are always updating and improving their software ...

Are touchscreen phones not able to simulate softkeys on the touchscreen itself?
In that case any software that works on a hardware keypad phone should work on a touchscreen phone right?
[ Can you tell I've not yet owned a touchscreen phone :) ? ]

garmin works well on a touch screen, almost exactly the same as the standalone garmin devices.

I read that the N97 has an FM "transmitter" which means theoretically that you can play music on your phone in your car, tune your radio to a certain frequency and pick up on your radio whats playing on your phone. Can anyone confirm this ?

Yes, I saw the feature last night. Will test it out this afternoon and revert back to how well it works :)

Someone mentioned it does not have TV out - if you go Settings,Phone,Accessories...the option is there...never used TV out, even on my N95 - but the option seems to be there?

Used to have Garmin on my N95....will test it out and install on my N97 - not much coming up on google though unfortunately....

Yes..ive been using it regularly over the last few days.....it does not transmit over a very long distance (say 2 or 3 meters) but in most cases it comes out very clear and my RDS radio indicates "NOKIA". The trick of course is to get the RDS to tune into the FM signal...at first I battled because the FM band it quite congested......but got it after a bit of fiddling, saved the station!

Garmin XT works very well on the N97 .... MUST USE VERSION 5.00.50 found below. There is a small glitch of tiling in lanscape mode but its perfect in Portrait mode with nice big touch screen buttons!

GOT TO TELL YOU GUYS.....JUST LOVIN DIS PHONE! Its important to do the software update though, much improved performance.

I cant get my transmitter to work at all... When enabling it, it says tune in and listen to the music. I tried to tune to the station manually, and all I hear are faint beep sounds. Maybe because of the 2-3 metres thing, my car aerial is one of those that are mounted at the back of the car's roof. Will try again today though....

Can the transmitter be used as a "hands free" sort of device, in other words if someone calls while driving the voice will route through the car speakers?

Have to agree, Garmin does look pretty sweet - runs MUCH faster than it did on my old N95!

ok so a few days using it and this is what i hate:

1. The bloody facebook app!!!! it freezes my phone at times, its unresponsive ... i hate it!

What i love:

1. Push email ... its a god send ... (i think its push)

I used 88.3Mhz in my area.....My RDS car radio battled at first (I found putting the phone on the dash works)

The FM transmitter only works for playing back music........As soon as a call comes in it switches back to the phone.....when the call ends the music starts playing on the car radio again via the FM transmitter.

Yeah Garmin is fast now....i dont even get "searching for satellites" or "getting better accuracy" anymore. It goes straight to "Calculating route". Also it seems to be able to lock into a whoule lot more satellites.....on "Positioning Data" app Ive seen mine lock into 12 at a time.....

errrr i got mine at R359 signed contract ... got the phone yesterday ... thats all im saying, maybe phone MTN-SP and find out for yourself ...

so what are the prices with MTN-SP then if not R359pm on an anytime200?

Okay, so I went to MTN at N1 City here in Cape Town to find out for myself. There is a R3600 pay-in on the AnyTime 200 contract as per the official MTN system. The staff showed me. Is it possible that different outlets work on different "systems"? How in the world can the customer win this battle? One guy gets his phone for free (no pay-in) and the next guy must pay in R3600.

I wish MTN could explain this to us, but it's like hunting polar bears in Cairo.

Okay, the maths: R489 - R359 = R130. R130 x 24 = R 3120. So the guy getting the N97 on the AnyTime 200 contract pays more. That is IF a pay-in on the AT200 is indeed required ... adamr's case says no.

If one then further considers that the person on the AT350 contract gets R150 per month more value to use than the person on the AT200 contract it's becoming even more crazy. The person on the AT200 contract who paid-in the R3600 is screwed big time. Something is very wrong here.
