Thanks @Kosmik @cavedog - something interresting:

Tracing to af-south.ran.geforcenow.nvidiagrid.net I go via Vodacom CPT IXP.
Ignore my high latency first hop (was running around and didn't grab a cable for this).

Tracing a hop before that to 196.46.64.2 reveals a different route via CPT INX
(EDIT: also seeing 196.10.140.169 as the 7th hop in place of rain.cinx.net.za at times)

Yoh! 80ms to jnb. Thats half my latency to europe at times.
Remember my caveat of I'm not cabled and running around  That's most likely partially attributed to WiFi issues - will test via cable later, just noticing the different path in routing.

Grabbed some output from PingPlotter (on a Windows box that I just left to run, so this one is a text summary as it's harder for me to get the graphics out).

The CINX route is faster by about 2-3ms and there's no loss to the igw01-jhb-core.rain.network [41.73.34.233] hop (or the Vodacom hops which obviously don't exist)...

I feel guilty. As I mentioned, this is my wifi stats :D

My pc to local pops is 2-3ms , 12ms to Jnb.

This pretty interesting. So it seems like the 196.46.65.0/24 block is the one that's causing issues?

I feel like this is something that Cool Ideas can fix without too much of a hassle, no?

I've asked AGAIN  Lets see what they say this time round.

Looks like CISP have made a routing change for me!

Slightly lower latency too!

Perfect. Yes so the issue IS on Rain's side with their transit provider Vodacom but yeah with some engineering it can mitigated by the ISP. The Vodacom route from CPT to JHB is not the best latency wise. Glad they managed to sort it out for you

I seriously can't wait for this thing to be released at this point, heck if the bokke win maybe they give earlycomers a bit of a discount
