Nvidia GTX 460

I am no longer totally convinced that the 5850 is the better option, not when you looling at e.g. R2799 for the 5850 and R2150 for the GTX460
Yes, the 5850 is faster but at a price difference, for that extra few percent, not wort it....

5850 is by far the batter choice

5970 is by far the better choice

ahh. so for a 'budget' gamer like myself, the 768mb version makes more sense
Not necessarily. You'll be suffering from obsolescence much quicker if you go for the 768 version.

So... C'mon Rory@wootware - put up or shut up time :D

5850 is an between 20-30% faster than a GTX460, how is that not worth it?

On a half decent multi core system, with sufficient ram and perhaps an SSD, I highly doubt that.

It's also between 20-30% more expensive. Not to mention, as pointed out by ME, that certain factory overclocked 460's can exceed 5850s at stock for $50 less (on Newegg). Yes, yes, yes, dollars for donuts and the rest of it.. it's still a winner.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150494&cm_re=5850-_-14-150-494-_-Product = $289
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261076 = $249

this 460>that 5850 for $40 less.

On a half decent multi core system, with sufficient ram and perhaps an SSD, I highly doubt that
Now why would you put an SSD with a 460? That's extreme high end stuff there.

So lets see, the 5850 is 20-30% faster, and also 20-30% more expensive. So they are equal value for money. And dont me started on OC vs stock, that is not a proper comparison

and the 5870 is faster and the GTX480 is faster, and the HD5970 is even faster. So if we go for speed only yes.

Exactly... that's all you said in your post:
5850 is an between 20-30% faster than a GTX460, how is that not worth it?

Which is meaningless. On a price/performance basis the 460 is extremely competitive.

So.... in what sense is the 5850 'by far' a better choice than 460? At a certain budget the 460 is a better choice than anything ATI has to offer.

I was responding to a post where the choice was between a 5850 and a GTX465. So tell me, was I right in saying the 5850 the better choice?

The 768mb version and the 1GB version are basically two different cards with the same processor. There's more than just a difference in ram. The 768mb version could have been called a GTX455 if you look at the differences below:

768mb vs 1GB
192bit memory bus vs 256 bit memory bus
24 ROP's vs 32 ROP's
348KB cache vs 512KB cache

Normally with cards of the same name you would only maybe see a difference in ram and nothing else. Nvidia may be trying to cash in on reviews that claimed that too much ram does not make much of a difference in fps. So people with lower resolution screens will jump on the 768mb version thinking that a 1GB version would give the same fps at lower resolution. The 1GB version will always be better though, unless you're CPU bound.
